The V Foundation Awards 2011 V Scholars

The V Foundation for Cancer Research, one of the nation’s leading cancer research fundraising organizations, announced today that seventeen physicians/scientists across the United States have been awarded two-year, $200,000 grants through the 2011 V Scholar program. The $3.4 million in funding given through the V Scholar program is an integral part of The V Foundation’s grant initiatives that funds young scientists as they begin their career in cancer research. This funding, given to researchers across eleven different states, is continually bringing science closer to finding a cure for cancer.

V Scholar grants were awarded to each of these promising individuals through a competitive process managed by The V Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board. This allows the V Scholar to decide the best means for using the funding in his or her research project.

“Each year, the V Scholars are selected from a group of young cancer scientists that includes the most outstanding candidate from each of the National Cancer Institute designated cancer centers,” said Robert C. Bast, Jr., M.D., Vice President for Translational Research at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board. This year the V Scholars are even more exceptional than in the past.”

Each year, The V Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board selects an outstanding project to award in honor of Martin Abeloff, a former Scientific Advisory Board member. This year, having received two outstanding proposals, the Martin D. Abeloff Scholar Award will go to two V Scholar researchers: Greg Wang from the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill, N.C., and Hongwu Zheng from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.
