The V Foundation for Cancer Research and Dick Vitale Team Up to Raise Money for Cancer Research

Tickets to the Sixth Annual Dick Vitale Gala Available Now, Roy Williams and John Calipari to be Honored

The V Foundation for Cancer Research announced today that tickets are now on sale for the sixth annual Dick Vitale Gala for Cancer Research, to be held on Friday, May 20, 2011, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Sarasota, Florida.  Dick Vitale will be joined by national and local sports celebrities to honor two great collegiate basketball coaches: the University of Kentucky’s John Calipari and the University of North Carolina’s Roy Williams. ESPN’s John Saunders will emcee the Gala, which will also feature a special tribute to Nick Bollettieri, a world renowned tennis coach and founder of Bollettieri Academy.

Honoree John Calipari is the 22nd coach in University of Kentucky history.  He led the University of Massachusetts basketball program to national prominence in the ‘90s and resurrected the Memphis basketball program in the early 2000s, before moving on to University of Kentucky.  He is only the second coach to be named Naismith National Coach of the Year twice, since the award’s inception in 1987.

Honoree Roy Williams owns one of the best winning records among NCAA Division I active coaches.  In 2003, he returned to his alma mater as the Tar Heels’ head coach.  Prior to returning to UNC, he headed the Kansas Jayhawks where, in 15 seasons, he established himself as a premier NCAA head coach.  His most recent National Championship was in 2009, with the Tar Heels capturing their fifth NCAA Tournament Title.

“Dick’s support of The V Foundation over the years has been tremendous,” said Nick Valvano, CEO of The V Foundation. “The response we receive from the coaching community is unbelievable. We are looking forward to another great event.”

Net proceeds of the Gala will be donated to The V Foundation, which funds research for all types of cancers nationally, and was founded by Vitale’s good friend, the late Jim Valvano and ESPN. Since 2006, the Vitale Gala has raised $3.65 million for The V Foundation, which has been used in funding research at Florida cancer facilities.  Vitale, a Bradenton-Sarasota native, aims to raise at least $1 million at this event each year.
