Jimmy V Men’s and Women’s Basketball Classics Matchups

Annual Events are Finale to Jimmy V Week which Benefits The V Foundation for Cancer Research

Matchups for the 2012 Jimmy V Women’s and Men’s Basketball Classics on Monday, Dec. 3, and Tuesday, Dec. 4, respectively, have been determined.

Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic

The men’s doubleheader, held at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden for the 10th consecutive year, will tip off at 7 p.m. ET with Texas vs. Georgetown followed by North Carolina State vs. Connecticut at 9 p.m., both on ESPN.

It will mark the second time N.C. State has played in the Classic, which benefits the Foundation founded by ESPN and former ESPN analyst and N.C. State head coach Jim Valvano. Valavano led the Wolfpack to the National Championship in 1983 and passed away from cancer in 1993. N.C. State lost to Gonzaga 69-60 in the 2002 event. It will be Connecticut’s first appearance in the event.

Texas split its first two Classic matchups with a 67-58 victory over Villanova in 2008 and a 91-83 loss to Arizona in 2003. Georgetown has played in one Classic, a 72-65 win over Butler in 2009.

Jimmy V Women’s Basketball Classic

The previously announced 2012 Jimmy V Women’s Classic will pit Connecticut against Maryland on Monday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. The 11th annual game will be played at one of Connecticut’s two home facilities – the XL Center in Hartford or Gampel Pavilion on campus in Storrs.

The game will mark the first meeting between the storied programs. Connecticut will be making its fifth appearance in Classic, winning last year’s game against Texas A&M 81-51 and the 2002 matchup over NC State 78-50. Connecticut lost to North Carolina in back-to-back Classics, 71-65 in 2004 and 77-54 in 2005. Maryland played in the event in 2007, a 60-68 lost to Rutgers.

Once again, the two early season events that showcase top college basketball programs on ESPN and ESPN2 will conclude the fifth annual Jimmy V Week, a weeklong initiative across multiple ESPN platforms and programs featuring special content to help raise funds for cancer research.  In five years, Jimmy V Week has generated more than $5 million in total contributions for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, including an initiative-record $1.3 million in net proceeds last year.

Tickets for the Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic will go on sale in the fall via Ticketmaster and at the Madison Square Garden Box Office.
