Make your wedding day even bigger!
Post from our amazing intern, Kaylon Kirk, senior at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
They say on your wedding day, it’s supposed to be all about you. “Your” day. Your day to be photographed. Your day to hold everyone’s attention. Your day to be showered with gifts. However, for many couples this year, their wedding day has been about something much larger than themselves; they chose to use their special day as an opportunity to raise funding for cancer research. Through The V Foundation for Cancer Research Wedding Tribute program, couples and their guests have been generously giving thousands to cancer research projects.
Many couples have chosen a dedicated donation in lieu of party favors; instead of guests bringing home a gift or souvenir from the wedding, they are receive the promise of a donation to The V Foundation from the newly married pair. Others choose to request donations toward The V Foundation in place of wedding gifts, oftentimes in memory or honor of a friend or relative. Approximately 25 wedding tributes have already taken place in 2012.
Some couples really know how to make it fun. One pair gave out fortune cookies to guests that, when opened, revealed that newlyweds had made a donation to The V Foundation in their guests’ honor. Another made a donation in the amount of $303.93, to commemorate March 30th, 1993, the date that Jim Valvano gave his legendary ESPY acceptance speech, urging us to support the fight, so that “someone else might survive, might prosper and might actually be cured of this dreaded disease.”
