Remember the run in 1983? We do!
It’s March Madness!
I don’t know about you but I love this time of year. There is nothing like a good, old-fashioned tournament to determine a National Champion. What a concept!
This week 68 teams will begin competing for the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship. Yet, sometimes when the announcers start talking about “Cinderella” stories, you can’t help to think about one of the original “Cinderella” stories.
What makes Coach Valvano’s 1983 National Championship run so “Cinderella” like to me is that of the six games, four of the games were won by two or less.
First North Carolina State University played Pepperdine in the opening round and won by two points. Then, the upsets started happening. NC State beat the number three seed, University of Nevada Las Vegas, by one point to go to the Sweet Sixteen.
To get to the Elite Eight, NC State beat the tenth seeded University of Utah by 19 points, their largest victory in the tournament. And to send them to the Final Four, they upset the University of Virginia, a one seed, by one point.
In the Final Four, NC State was the lowest seed and they faced the University of Georgia. It was UGA’s first trip to the NCAA tournament and NC State beat them by seven points to go to the championship game. And in very NC State fashion, they upset Houston, a one seed, in the National Championship Game by two points to win the title.
So, as you are filling out your brackets this week, remember, someone will be this year’s “Cinderella.” Who will you choose?
