Susan Braun Selected as The V Foundation’s Next Chief Executive Officer

The V Foundation for Cancer Research, one of the nation’s leading cancer research foundations, is proud to announce Susan Braun as its CEO, effective September 17, 2012.  Braun was selected after a national search and most recently served as the executive director at Commonweal in California.  She will succeed current CEO Nick Valvano who has led The V Foundation for the past 13 years.

“I am deeply honored to be chosen as the next CEO of The V Foundation.  The organization has a stellar record for funding top-quality, important cancer research.  With its strong board, staff, and scientific advisors, it is poised to make even greater strategic contributions to what we know about cancer – its origins, its evolution, and its treatments – and to ending the suffering that cancer causes millions of individuals and their loved ones each year,” said Susan Braun.  I look forward to all that we will do together to put an end to cancer.”

Susan Braun has extensive experience leading major nonprofits.  Her previous positions include executive director of The American Society of Clinical Oncology Cancer Foundation, CEO of the CURE Media Group and President and CEO of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (now Susan G. Komen for the Cure).  Braun also served as an executive at Bristol-Myers Squibb and the Center for Economic Studies in Medicine.  Additionally, she has been a member of numerous boards and committees, including the California Breast Cancer Research Program, American Society for Breast Disease, World Society of Breast Health, Smith Center for Healing and the Arts, Americorps NCCC, Intercultural Cancer Council and more.  Braun received her B.A. from George Mason University, M.A. in Health Science from the University of Maryland and M.B.A. from Westfalische Wihelms-Universitat in Germany.

“We’re extremely excited to have such a seasoned executive join our team as Chief Executive Officer,” said Bob Lloyd, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “Susan’s background and experience make her the ideal individual to continue the growth of The V Foundation and allow us to fund even more quality research in the future.  Under Nick’s direction, The V Foundation has grown tremendously over the past years.  The Board looks forward to Susan building on the foundation Nick has put in place.”

Nick Valvano, brother to the late Jim Valvano, The V Foundation’s namesake, is stepping away from the helm after taking over in 1999.  That year, the Foundation awarded $1.7 million in cancer research grants.  During Valvano’s time as CEO, the Foundation has grown that figure to $14.4 million in 2012.  With Valvano’s leadership, The V Foundation awards 100% of direct donations to cancer research through stringent fiscal management.  Valvano will remain on The V Foundation’s Board of Directors and take part in special projects.

“We’re very pleased to have Susan serve as our new CEO,” said Nick Valvano.  “I think my brother would be thrilled to have her on our team, joining our fight.”
