20th Anniversary: Jim Valvano Kids Klassic
Before The V Foundation was even concieved, Jim Valvano was active in the cancer research community. In 1985, a golf classic was started called the Kids Klassic to benefit cancer patients at Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center. Jim Valvano participated in the first tournament that raised $2,500.
Throughout the years, Jim and his friends played in the tournament and even helped film commercials for promotion of the event. The tournament has grown quite a bit over the past 28 years, but one of the biggest changes came in 1993 after the death of Jim Valvano. A discussion between sponsors and chairs resulted in the renaming of the event Jim Valvano Kids Klassic.
In 1996, The V Foundation and the Jim Valvano Kids Klassic teamed up to raise money to create a floor at Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center. The floor is now known as the Jim Valvano Day Hospital.
When discussing the relationship between The V Foundation and the Jim Valvano Kids Klassic, Don Shea, a founder of the Klassic said it best, “During Jim’s speech, he talked about helping children and he was a true advocate. This is just another way to keep his spirit alive.”
