Hoops for Hope–A Story of Two Brothers and Their Search For a Cure

Picture 4-1After losing their mother to ovarian cancer, Ryan and Jason Brumwell set out to continue her legacy. The duo merged their love for basketball with their dedication to finding a cure and started the Diane Brumwell Memorial Hoops for Hope Tournament in 2006 while their mother was battling the disease.

Jim Valvano’s legendary speech inspired the brothers to support The V Foundation for Cancer Research. “His speech reminded us so much of our Mom, just in his passion for life and living it to its fullest…his words resonated the sentiment of our mother so perfectly we knew we had found our organization,” said Ryan Brumwell.

This year they will be hosting the 9th Annual Hoops for Hope Tournament  April 11-13, in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota. The fundraising event features a men’s and women’s 18+ basketball tournament and silent auction. Each player is asked to raise a minimum of $100 and the individuals who raise the most money are awarded the Diane Brumwell Hope Award.

“We have survivors as well as individuals playing in the memory of a lost loved one. We have coaches, ex-college players, hockey players, team managers, water boys, has-beens, never-weres, basically anyone who wants to make a difference! The competition is outstanding but everyone is here for one reason and that’s to find a cure,” said Brumwell.

They hope to raise even more money this year with the addition of two new fundraising events, the Be The Match Donor Drive and Shooting for a Cure. The Be The Match bone marrow drive will be taking place at the event. The Shooting for a Cure fundraiser takes place at halftime during high school varsity men’s and women’s basketball games, where $2 tickets are sold for a chance to make a free throw for a slice of pizza, a half-court shot for a $20 gift certificate to a local restaurant and a ¾-court shot for half of the pot.

“We will find a cure, but until then we will continue our battle in the name of our mother, Coach Valvano, the many others we’ve lost along the way, and those who continue or have won their own personal battles! Together we will never give up!” said Brumwell.
