Ninth Annual Racquets for Research Draws Notable Tennis Professionals to Join the Fight Against Cancer

The V Foundation for Cancer Research, one of the nation’s leading cancer research funding organizations, is proud to announce the 9th Annual Racquets for Research event will be held on Friday, September 12, 2014, and Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the North Hills Racquet Club in Raleigh, NC.  Racquets for Research offers tennis players the opportunity to play with and learn from ATP and WTA world-class playing professionals.  Net proceeds of the event will benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research.

“Tennis provides us with a great opportunity to stay healthy and have a good time,” said Susan Braun, CEO of The V Foundation. “Racquets for Research adds the ability to give back and help cancer research.  What a wonderful combination!”

In its ninth year, Racquets for Research continues to bring notable tennis celebrities to the Triangle area.  Don Johnson, Tennis Hall of Fame inductee and former Men’s and Mixed Doubles Wimbledon Champion, returns for his ninth consecutive Racquets for Research event.  Other distinguished tennis stars scheduled to attend include 1981 and 1982 Australian Open Champion Johan Kriek; former world number one ranked men’s doubles player, and 1995 Australian Open and 2001 Wimbledon Doubles Champion Jared Palmer; two-time Olympian Brenda Schultz-McCarthy, who boasts one of the biggest serves in women’s tennis at 130 mph; and former Top 20 ATP Player Tim Wilkison.  Tennis fans are invited to mingle, play, watch and learn from the professionals during clinic sessions, exhibitions and competitions.

“My Grand Slam Champions and I are very eager and excited to return to the North Hills Club for the 9th Annual Jimmy V Racquets for Research event,” said Johnson.  “We encourage any and all tennis players and fans to register while spots are still available so they can join us for a truly worthy cause and two days of tennis fun and instruction.”

For the second year, Racquets for Research will take place over two days and include a dinner and social on Friday, September 12.  Friday will also feature a mixed doubles competition, pro clinic and exhibition starting at 5:00 p.m.  Food and beverages for Friday’s dinner and social will be provided by The Butcher’s Market and Long Beverage.  Saturday will feature men’s and women’s doubles competition as well as another pro clinic and exhibition starting at 8:00 a.m. with lunch provided by PDQ.

Last year’s Racquets for Research event netted nearly $29,000 for cancer research through The V Foundation.  The money raised for The V Foundation is distributed to the best scientists nationwide through a competitive peer-review process strictly supervised by a Scientific Advisory Committee.
