Support the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Miss Hooters International 2014 Janet Layug1If there’s one thing that’s near and dear to my Hooters family, it’s supporting the fight against breast cancer.

I’m proud to be one of more than 18,000 Hooters Girls around the globe and part of a workforce made up of 70% women. I might be a little biased, but I can’t think of another dining destination as uniquely qualified to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research!

Throughout the month of October, I am encouraging all of America to support our Hooters locations across the nation in the fight against breast cancer. Over the last decade, Hooters has proudly raised nearly $2 million for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Much of it was raised in honor of the late Kelly Jo Dowd, one of the original Hooters Girls, who valiantly battled breast cancer for five years before succumbing in 2007. Throughout her struggle, she was courageous and selfless, becoming an advocate for early detection, education and fundraising. Her influence on Hooters’ culture of service remains as strong as ever, and her story is one that resonates with me and so many of my fellow Hooters Girls.

Kelly Jo discovered a lump in her breast, but she did not take action until almost a year later. I know cancer can be a scary or intimidating topic to discuss, so in addition to our fundraising effort, I developed a “Hooters Girl to Girl Checklist” with five early detection reminders meant to be words of encouragement from one Hooters Girl to another.

If you have a friend or loved one affected by breast cancer, we encourage you to help show your support by downloading a personal poster online and sharing a photo through social channels with the hashtag #SupportOurHooters! You can also pick up a 2015 Hooters Calendar, sip on a Pink Passion beverage or “pink up” your Hooters tab with a donation. Make sure you snag a pink bracelet for a minimum $3 donation at any Hooters location to show everyone that you give a HOOT!

As 2014 Miss Hooters International and the 2015 Hooters Calendar Cover Girl, I have the honor of touring the U.S. along with fellow Hooters Calendar Girls to make appearances, sign calendars and spread awareness for the Support Our Hooters campaign this month.  Check out www.HootersCalendar.com to find out if I’m making a stop near you!

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month in full swing, every small action—whether it’s rounding up your check at Hooters or sharing a message on Twitter—will rapidly add up to help treat and find a cure for breast cancer, which can only be accomplished through research.

Visit www.Hooters.com to find your nearest Hooters location and learn how you can get involved. On behalf of the Hooters family, I thank you for your support!

Yours truly,

Janet Layug
