The V Foundation for Cancer Research’s annual fundraiser, The V Wine Celebration, garnered more than $10.6 million for cancer research over the weekend of August 6-9. With an unprecedented $3 million matching grant from an anonymous donor, the total included more than $7.8 million in Fund-A-Need donations to support pediatric brain cancer research.

The event was hosted by Duke University basketball coach Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski, who has made a career of inspiring players and motivating them to be winners. It attracted attendees from all over the U.S. to Napa Valle, California to benefit the Foundation’s efforts to support cutting-edge cancer research at major institutions. Over the last 16 years, The V Wine Celebration has raised more than $58 million, and funds have helped the Foundation provide cancer research grants nationwide.

The V Wine Celebration weekend included a series of events. During the day on Friday, members of The Giving Club attended the Presidents Club & Vintner Grant Honoree Luncheon sponsored by Bentley Motors at HALL Wines, where the 2015 Vintner Grant honorees, Rick Jones of Jones Family Vineyards and his wife Elaine, were recognized for their continued support of The V Foundation. In her remarks, Elaine Jones thanked Jim Valvano, “who started it all.” ESPN and “Jimmy V” launched the Foundation named for him in 1993, the year he succumbed to cancer. A cancer survivor herself, Elaine Jones said, “I don’t begin a day without saying that I will not give up.” The V Foundation announced it will make a grant in the Joneses’ name to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center to help launch a research study on pancreatic cancer.

Friday night, guests attended intimate winery dinners at Raymond Vineyards, Silver Oak Cellars, Joseph Phelps Vineyards, B Cellars and Casa Piena. All dinner guests were invited to finish the evening at “Club Red,” the popular after-party at Raymond Vineyards. The weekend’s activities culminated with a gala dinner and live auction Saturday at Nickel & Nickel Winery, which has served as home of The V Wine Celebration for the last 11 years. The bidding remained lively through all 32 lots, with guests purchasing experiences that included a high seas adventure aboard the Duncan family’s private 122-foot SOC (Silver Oak Cellars) yacht; week-long stays in stunning vacation villas around the world; and premier sporting events with VIP access, such as the 50th Super Bowl, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with Bentley Motors and a golfing experience with 2010 LPGA Champion Cristie Kerr, who was on hand to encourage guests to bid up the lot. Other lots included an ultimate culinary exploration in New Orleans with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse and Pride Mountain Vineyards, and a trip to Montana, including a dinner with rock star Huey Lewis, who performed at the gala dinner.
