“Cancer can take away all of my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul. And these three things are going to carry on forever.”
Cancer changed my body. I have faded scars and lingering side effects that serve as reminders of what this disease took from me. Once I had completed treatment, luckily, my body began to heal. Since I was his daughter, everyone expected me to possess the same unquenchable spirit found in Jim Valvano. In reality, I had a challenging time navigating the new paths my life would take as a survivor.
In celebration of 10 years cancer free, I am participating in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh 1/2 marathon in April. I recently ran wearing my Team V shirt, V Hat and my V pin inside of my shorts. I have never been athletic, and quite
sadly, I have become quite mushy over the past few years. Getting back in shape is certainly going to be a challenge, but I am not alone. Other members of Team V surrounded me on the trail, and Coach Larissa cheered us on with her infectious energy.
During the short time it took to complete the 3 miles, I never looked behind me, and I solely focused on the road ahead. The running will result in a multitude of health benefits, but as I completed the training run, I felt more alive than I had in quite some time. The words my father spoke washed over me as I realized cancer had not diminished the most precious parts of my mind, heart and soul. As I run my race and tell my story, he is with me every step of the way.
Join me in showing the world that our team will not defeated.
