In Their Own Words: Mike Greenberg
The V Foundation is successful thanks to the contributions of many: donors, corporate partners, our incredible Board and Scientific Advisory Committee and the amazing researchers to whom we award grants. With “In Their Own Words,” we sit down with key members of our team to learn more about their commitment to the V Foundation and their personal desire to put an end to cancer. In this edition, we chat with superstar ESPN broadcaster, Mike Greenberg.
The V Foundation: What’s your favorite Jimmy V story?
Mike Greenberg: I suppose everyone’s favorite story is the improbable run his team authored in 1983. I was a 15 year-old hoops junkie and I will never forget NC State finishing off perhaps the greatest Cinderella run in tournament history. Coach Valvano racing around looking for someone to hug is one of the truly legendary moments in the history of sports.
TVF: How has cancer affected your life?
MG: Where to begin? Sadly, cancer has impacted both my wife’s family and mine, just as it has everyone else’s.
TVF: You’ve consistently been on of the V Foundation’s biggest supporters. Why is funding cancer research so important to you?
MG: My passion for cancer research was taken to a new level in 2009 after the death of my dear friend Heidi Armitage. She was 43 with two young kids. It was the most unjust thing I had ever seen. I wrote a novel inspired by her story in 2013 called “All You Could Ask For” and my wife and I proudly donate 100% of our proceeds from the book to the V Foundation in her memory.
TVF: What does “Victory Over Cancer” look like to you?
MG: It looks like a cure. For all cancers. Nothing less. And I genuinely believe I will live to see it happen.
