A Few Words from our Virginia Vine Event Chair

“Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up!”® has been the V Foundation for Cancer Research’s rallying cry since our inception 27 years ago, as adopted from Jim Valvano’s speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards.

Today, this is all the more poignant, and while we are committed to our fight to achieve Victory Over Cancer®, we share this sentiment with all across the globe as we experience a time today like nothing before.

We’re disappointed to cancel the Virginia Vine weekend event – still in its infancy of just six years and enjoying the added support of our new Honorary Advisory Board. Our committee worked hard, proven with a steady uptick of attendees, assembling a great array of auction items, sponsors and all the many individuals, companies and other entities that were truly the wind beneath our wings. Members of our Scientific Advisory Committee were poised and ready to share an update on important progress on cancer research, in particular with this event dedicated to immunotherapy.

We remain beholden to Stone Tower Winery for their unrelenting support of the V Foundation in hosting our event in their “home.” The Salamander Resort & Spa, equally gracious, has invited us back in 2021. And Green Hill Winery & Vineyards is on board to provide great wine tasting events. We will also proceed next year with what this year would have been our inaugural Friday night Nashville Comes to Middleburg at the Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. We thank all of our sponsors and are re-energizing for an even better 2021 event.

From the entire Virginia Vine committee, we thank you heartily for your support of 2020, and we look forward to 2021. The pandemic has turned our world on our collective head, and our response is critical. We know as we find our way clear of this pandemic through scientists identifying a vaccine, we must soldier on to find an equal annihilator of cancer.

As cancer touches all of our lives, we remain determined. Thank you, again, for your past support, as we look forward to your ongoing commitment. We wish you health and strength during these times.

With sincere optimism and commitment to “Don’t Ever Give Up!” spirit,

Julie Chase

While there is still much to discover in the world of immunotherapy, early findings are already making an impact.

Advancements in this exciting area of research are not only helping some to survive cancer, but also to thrive. Learn more about some of these “Thrivers,” and about the research that is helping to make a difference.

Stone Tower Winery

When we set out to find a venue for Virginia Vine in Loudoun County, the goal wasn’t just to find a space that would dazzle our guests and supporters – it was to find a partner to share in the V Foundation’s mission to achieve Victory Over Cancer®. Fortunately for us, our expectations were greatly exceeded with Stone Tower Winery in Leesburg. Since 2017, Mike and Kristi Huber of Stone Tower Winery have graciously opened their doors (and uncorked more than a few bottles) for the Virginia Vine Auction Gala, welcoming new guests and longtime friends of the V Foundation.

Why do we love Stone Tower Winery?

Whether it’s wine, cuisine, great entertainment or breathtaking views of Virginia wine country, we want our guests to experience the best the region has to offer. As a flagship winery of the Loudoun County area, we believe Stone Tower Winery offers the best setting to enjoy many of the area’s local delights. When you arrive, you’ll notice the grounds and indoor spaces accomplish a rare balance between modern elegance and a sense of tradition and warmth. While touring the tank room and cellar, you’ll witness Stone Tower’s commitment to winemaking excellence in action. And finally, once you’ve sampled a signature Stone Tower vintage with a stunning view of the sunset over the vineyard’s rolling hills, you’ll know exactly why we love this place so much.

Greenhill Winery & Vineyards

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, on land where grapevines stretch for acres and acres, is an exceptional wine maker with a passion for producing the finest Virginia wines. Greenhill Winery & Vineyards offers an intimate experience in their three premier wine clubs with an ambience that recalls a quieter time. We could not ask for a better setting for Virginia Vine’s newest Saturday afternoon soiree than one overlooking the beautiful countryside of Middleburg. While we could not enjoy it this April, we are pleased to announce Greenhill will be a part of Virginia Vine in 2021.

The V Foundation is proud to expand the Virginia Vine weekend at Greenhill, with Voices for Victory, a two-part afternoon event featuring a blend of cancer research and sports. Voices for Victory begins with a dynamic panel of cancer researchers sharing their work in immunotherapy, and how V Foundation funding is driving them toward Victory Over Cancer®. Following the scientific symposium, guests will enjoy a conversation featuring ESPN on-air talent and V Foundation Board member Jay Bilas and sports greats Dereck Whittenburg and Ralph Sampson, covering everything from sports to how cancer has affected them and shaped their careers.

“We are so pleased to expand the Virginia Vine weekend to include this new feature at such an amazing winery,” said Danielle Lavetan, Director of Events at the V Foundation. “Greenhill Winery & Vineyards is a beautiful farm winery and their dedication to exceptional wine making stands out. Our guests will be treated to a gorgeous setting, with world-class wines as we enjoy Voices for Victory during the Virginia Vine weekend.”

Thank You to our Scientific Advisory Committee

Our Scientific Advisory Committee takes volunteering to another level. As a group of the nation’s leading cancer physicians and research scientists, they have extremely high standards when reviewing grant applications and overseeing funding awards. Without them, we could not do what we do – fund breakthrough cancer research.

Thank you to each and every one of them!
