Scoops for Stu

In his 2014 ESPYS speech that continues to inspire to this day, Stuart Scott delivered motivation, wisdom and hope. However, every parent who has ever listened to his speech was nodding along (perhaps with a tear in their eye) most enthusiastically to one line in particular:

“The best thing I’ve done, the best thing I will ever do, is be a dad to Taelor and Sydni.”

After their father passed away in 2015, Taelor and Sydni wanted to find a way to remember him. They decided that on his birthday, July 19, they’d get some ice cream (Stuart’s favorite treat) and cheers a scoop or two to their dad. They posted a photo on social media with the hashtag #ScoopsforStu, and others quickly jumped on board.

While nobody knew Stuart like his daughters, for a certain generation, he felt like a part of everyday life. Sports fans who flipped on “SportsCenter” in the morning or had ESPN on before they went to bed had Stuart as the soundtrack of their lives. So, when given the chance to honor his legacy, people jumped on board.

This year, we’ll celebrate #ScoopsforStu on National Ice Cream Day, July 18. We encourage you to join the V Foundation, Taelor and Sydni in remembering Stuart by enjoying some of his favorite treat. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Go grab a scoop (or two!) of your favorite ice cream
  • Post a photo on your social media accounts and use #ScoopsforStu
  • If you’re able, visit v.org and make a donation to the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund

Taelor and Sydni have become passionate supporters of their dad’s cancer research fund, which focuses on finding the cause of and solving the cancer disparities experienced by patients of minority populations, as well as scientists from minority ethnic groups underrepresented in science.

This was an important cause for Stuart, and is for his daughters as well. As Sydni recently told ESSENCE, “With grief still by my side, nevertheless, I can – and must – try to make life better for those who still have a chance to keep their families and communities whole, and we can all be a part of that process.”

We hope you’ll join us on July 18 to honor Stuart Scott, raise awareness for his fund and dollars to support life-saving research, and enjoy some delicious ice cream that is “cooler than the other side of the pillow.”
