Join ESPN and the V Foundation for Cancer Research on July 10 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC for the 2021 ESPYS.

We can’t wait to celebrate the impact made by athletes, teams and fans, who are using sports to bring us together and make our world a better place.

The V Foundation’s story began at ESPN’s inaugural ESPY Awards in 1993. Jim Valvano, legendary basketball coach and ESPN commentator, received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award for his perseverance and positive outlook amidst his cancer diagnosis. During his unforgettable speech, Jim announced the formation of the V Foundation for Cancer Research together with ESPN. To date, the organization has awarded more than $260 million in grants nationwide, funding lifesaving research and projects.

This year’s ESPYS will honor the legacy of Stuart Scott, who was a passionate supporter of cancer research and especially driven to improve outcomes for Black and other minority patients disproportionately affected by cancer. Six years ago, the V Foundation and ESPN created the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund. To date, $12.7 million has funded minority scientists and research in cancer disparities.

VIDEO OF STUART’S ESPY SPEECH

Did you know Black patients have a higher overall death rate from cancer than all other racial and ethnic groups in the U.S? We need to find out why and learn so we can better detect and treat these cancers. With your help, we can close the gap on cancer inequalities experienced by patients of all minority populations.

Together, we are working to eliminate disparities in cancer research.

“When you die, it does not mean that you lost to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live.” – Stuart Scott
