Those words ring as true today as they did that memorable evening at the ESPYs, when Jim Valvano captivated the hearts and minds of all affected by cancer during his acceptance of the first Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. What launched from that speech was not only inspirational but aspirational. It was also a vision and a commitment to lift up the best and brightest in the cancer research community with financial support through the benevolence of our donors. We have made significant progress over the past 28 years, but there is still much more work to be done to achieve Victory Over Cancer®.
Here at the V Foundation, we are a group of advocates, creators, builders, thinkers, innovators, dreamers, and most importantly, doers who believe that the whole of our efforts far outweighs the sum of our parts. Chief Marketing Officer & Senior Vice President for Strategic Engagement
The V Foundation is excited to announce the creation of a new position. The Chief Marketing Office & Senior Vice President for Strategic Engagement (“CMO/SVP”) will arrive at a seminal point, given the impressive history of the organization and the opportunities on the horizon. A bold strategic plan imagines the V Foundation as evermore influential in generating awareness, relevance, and revenue that accelerate the cures for cancer and save lives. Under the general direction of a new CEO, and with encouragement from an extraordinary board of directors, the CMO/SVP will be invited to chart a strategic, collaborative, and bold path forward.
The CMO/SVP will leverage several built-in strengths of the organization, including positive reputational awareness and a dedicated team. The V Foundation also enjoys productive relationships with iconic brands and critical industry and research partners. The CMO/SVP and his/her/their team will have the opportunity to steward and grow these relationships, as well as enhance and develop assets that facilitate entrepreneurial thinking and action to more fully build out our capacity. The V Foundation is engaged in many markets, along with several noteworthy industry champions, athletes, celebrities, and board members. The CMO/SVP will be a key team player who can help us enhance the connection with core brand partners—including with our founding partner, ESPN—to add value across organizations.
To achieve success, the CMO/SVP will oversee a team of 10-plus staff and advise the V Foundation on the appropriate resource requirements to advance a sophisticated and impactful marketing and communications program. The CMO works cross-functionally to understand and drive the revenue and engagement needs and goals of the organization. This individual will also develop and help execute an integrated marketing, communications and fundraising plan. The CMO will lead the organization to adopt a best-practice mentality for the use of data, research, metrics, and analytics to drive sophisticated and robust stakeholder engagement. The successful candidate will be goal-oriented, inquisitive, creative, mission-driven, and a collaborative team player who can unlock potential to achieve record-breaking results.
The V Foundation benefits from an impressive board of directors. This accomplished group expands the volume of diverse resources available to help us achieve mission-centric results. Included as a resource is Don’t Ever Give Up, Inc. (“DEGU”), which is a 501(c)(3) charitable supporting organization formed by and operated exclusively for the benefit of the V Foundation. The staff and volunteers of DEGU raise funds and awareness to end cancer by supporting cutting-edge research through the V Foundation. The DEGU board, alongside the Marketing Committee of the V Foundation Board, stand ready to add expertise and action that amplifies our brand within a highly collaborative framework.
