The ‘Powered by the V Foundation’ Impact
Founded in 1998 by the NHL and NHLPA, Hockey Fights Cancer™ was the first national cause program pioneered by a major sports league. Hockey Fights Cancer™ has raised over $44 million since its inception, uniting players, teams and fans in support of those affected by cancer. In 2023, the V Foundation joined the initiative as the official charitable partner and AstraZeneca joined as the first official corporate partner in the U.S. In just two years since Hockey Fights Cancer™ partnered with the V Foundation, Hockey Fights Cancer™ has raised over $12M, thanks to the collective efforts of charitable partners, corporate sponsors, all 32 NHL Clubs and the global hockey community.
100% of direct donations to the V Foundation go to cancer research.
All administrative expenses are covered by an endowment.
Hockey Fights Cancer™ powered by the V Foundation presented by AstraZeneca:
- Dramatically increase the program’s fundraising and positive impact.
- Ensure the increased fundraising accelerates cancer research conducted by the best scientists in the world who are working to achieve Victory Over Cancer®.
- Share inspiring stories of survivorship from within the hockey community that underscore the vital importance of cancer research.
About the V Foundation
It started in 1993, when Jim Valvano stepped onto the stage at the inaugural ESPYS Award Show and delivered a speech that would inspire millions. Since that day, we’ve funded over $353 million in cancer research dedicated to seeking breakthroughs and saving lives.
Hockey Fights Cancer
For 26 years, the NHL and the NHL Players Association have been dedicated to fighting cancer through the Hockey Fights Cancer initiative. The program unites the entire hockey community to inspire hope and courage for those who are living with, going through, and moving past cancer.
Hockey Fights Cancer Game
Throughout the 2024-25 NHL season, each NHL team will host a Hockey Fights Cancer Game to recognize the fight against cancer and honor survivors. Find an upcoming Hockey Fights Cancer night near you!
The Research
The V Foundation continues to be one of the premier supporters of cutting-edge cancer research, awarding over $353 million in grants to the best and brightest scientists since its inception.
