ESPN & The V Foundation Announce 17th Annual V Week for Cancer Research

V Week is Supported Through Key Activations and Events Using the Power of Sport to Accelerate Victory Over Cancer®

As part of ESPN’s continued commitment to fundraise for the V Foundation for Cancer Research, ESPN’s 17th Annual V Week for Cancer Research will begin on GivingTuesday, Nov. 28, and continue through Sunday, Dec. 10. ESPN will drive awareness for the V Foundation and the legacy of Jim Valvano throughout its programming across platforms to encourage donations to fund life-saving cancer research. One hundred percent of all funds raised by ESPN will be directed to cancer research. To date, ESPN has helped raise nearly $200 million for the V Foundation in the fight to end cancer.

This year’s V Week will feature an array of storytelling around cancer research, survivorship and highlight iconic speeches on the importance of cancer research from Valvano, Dick Vitale, Robin Roberts and Stuart Scott. ESPN Radio will host a day-long takeover across its programming on GivingTuesday with simulcasts on ESPN2, with guests joining Unsportsmanlike (6 – 10 a.m. ET), Greeny (10 a.m. – 12 p.m. ET), Carlin vs. Joe (12 – 3 p.m. ET), Freddie and Harry (4 – 7 p.m. ET), Amber and Ian (7 – 10 p.m. ET) and GameNight (10 p.m. – 1 a.m. ET)  to share their uplifting stories of hope and support in the fight against cancer.

“Thirty years ago, Jim Valvano gave his legendary speech to never give up in the fight against cancer, and to this day, ESPN is committed to that by continuing to raise awareness and funds for the V Foundation to support cancer research,” said Kevin Martinez, vice president of ESPN Corporate Citizenship. “From annual events such as the ESPN Roadblock and Jimmy V Classic to new initiatives such as the strategic collaboration with the NHL around Hockey Fights Cancer, collectively, we’re bringing more fans together to support the fight against cancer.”

V Week also will feature a crossover with Hockey Fights Cancer (HFC) – a joint initiative of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) powered by the V Foundation – to unite the hockey community in support of cancer patients and their families. The NHL will have a league-wide moment across its games and its social media platforms paying tribute to HFC Month on Nov. 30, with the New York Islanders facing the Carolina Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+/Hulu. Additionally, ESPN will highlight HFC on Nov. 28, when the Philadelphia Flyers host their HFC Night against the Carolina Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Said V Foundation CEO Shane Jacobson: “V Week allows us to spotlight the importance of cancer research each year across the entire sports landscape. There is no more fitting way to close out the year – especially the V Foundation’s 30th anniversary – where we granted the most in any single year in our history (nearly $43 million), than alongside our founding partner, ESPN. This team has helped bring Jim Valvano’s vision of Victory Over Cancer® to life since day one, and we are grateful for their continued commitment to lifesaving research.”

Today, there are 18.1 million cancer survivors living in the United States, and that number is expected to be 22.5 million by 2032. The V Foundation awards 100% of its direct donations to cancer research and programs and has proudly awarded over $353 million in grants nationwide for cutting-edge cancer research.

Viewers can join the fight through a variety of initiatives throughout the 2023 V Week Campaign (Nov. 28 – Dec. 10), including:

  • Entire V Week: Throughout V Week, fans will hear the familiar song, “Stronger Than You Know.” The song – written by singer/songwriter/producers Brandon Rogers and Nickolas Pingree and recorded by Disney Music Group and multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Allegra Miles – returns for 2023 to support the efforts of the V Foundation’s mission to achieve Victory Over Cancer®.
  • Giving Tuesday (Nov. 28): ESPN and the V Foundation will promote the importance of joining the fight to accelerate Victory Over Cancer® by further supporting the V Foundation’s funding of the best and brightest cancer researchers in the country. Messaging begins on ESPN Radio at 6 a.m. ET, and it continues throughout Giving Tuesday and V Week. Supporters can give at v.org/donate.
  • The ESPN Roadblock (Nov. 29): The Roadblock is a 15-minute special that features the timeless Jim Valvano 1993 ESPY speech as well as a tribute to his legacy and the impact of the V Foundation. Jamie Valvano, Robin Roberts, Dick Vitale and others reflect on Jim’s legacy and how it has impacted their lives and the lives of so many others. The Roadblock runs from 7-7:15 p.m. ET on Nov. 29 across nearly all ESPN networks and platforms.
  • Hockey Fights Cancer (Nov. 30): Earlier this year, the NHLPA, NHL and the V Foundation announced a strategic collaboration for the HFC initiative. On Nov. 30, the NHL will have a league-wide moment across games and social platforms paying tribute to HFC Month, including the Carolina Hurricanes hosting the New York Islanders on ESPN+/Hulu. During V Week on Nov. 28, the Philadelphia Flyers will be on ESPN for their HFC Night.
  • Stuart Scott Fight Like Hell Night (Dec. 2): UFC is dedicating its fight on Dec. 2 to the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund. Scott had a strong connection to mixed martial arts and trained during his treatments. Fight Like Hell Night will feature Stuart Scott-related content and personal cancer stories from the UFC community. UFC also will donate to the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund at the V Foundation.
  • The 29th Annual Jimmy V Classic (Dec. 3 and 5): This year, more teams than ever before will be featured within the women’s and men’s Jimmy V Classics on ESPN platforms. On Dec. 3, three women’s games will take place on campus sites, which are, No. 1 South Carolina at Duke at 1 p.m. ET on ABC, No. 11 UConn at No. 10 Texas at 3 p.m. ET on ABC and No. 16 Ohio State at No. 20 Tennessee at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN. On Dec. 5 at Madison Square Garden, the men’s side will feature No. 13 Florida Atlantic vs. No. 24 Illinois at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, followed by No. 17 North Carolina vs. No. 4 UConn at 9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
  • Boo-Yah: A Celebration of Stuart Scott (Dec. 4): In New York City, the V Foundation will host this signature event as a tribute to the late Stuart Scott. Funds raised at the event will benefit the Stuart Scott Fund dedicated to tackling racial disparities in cancer outcomes. The fund has raised nearly $16 million to date. Tickets are available at v.org.
  • My Cause, My Cleats (Dec. 3): In conjunction with the NFL’s My Cause, My Cleats initiative, Josh Paschal of the Detroit Lions will dedicate his cleats to the V Foundation to show his passion for cancer research. Pascal has been a supporter of the V Foundation since his diagnosis at the University of Kentucky.
  • World Champions Cup (Dec. 7-10): The World Champions Cup is a first of its kind three-team, three-day stroke play golf tournament played at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, FL, that will bring major champions, Hall of Famers and legends of the game together each representing Team International, Team Europe and Team USA. A few notable competitors include: Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Vijay Singh, and more. Coverage of the tournament will include feature stories, integrations and fundraising elements for the V Foundation. For more information go to WorldChampionsCup.com.

The V Foundation holds 12 consecutive 4-star (highest) ratings from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities, and is among the top 2% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation also is a GuideStar Platinum Transparency rated charity.

For more information, visit the V Foundation’s website at v.org. The site amplifies the stories of impact of cancer research, the people leading this work and cancer thrivers who have benefitted from research to make progress towards the V Foundation’s vision of Victory Over Cancer®. Direct donations can be made at v.org/donate.

ESPN Announces the Finalists for the 2020 Sports Humanitarian Awards

The sixth annual Sports Humanitarian Awards, sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb, is a celebration of the impact made by athletes, teams and sports industry professionals who are using sports to make a difference in their communities and throughout the world. This year, the Sports Humanitarian Awards will combine with The 2020 ESPYS Presented by Capitol One for an inspirational evening that showcases the true power of sports. The show will air on June 21 on ESPN at 9 p.m. ET.

The Sports Humanitarian Awards will feature its honorees as part of The 2020 ESPYS including the recipients of the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award presented by Dove Men+Care, the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award presented by Anthem Foundation, the League Humanitarian Leadership Award and the Sports Humanitarian Team Award. The Sports Humanitarian Awards will present five additional honors in ESPN studio shows the week leading up to the ESPYS.

“ESPN recognizes that this year more than ever, athletes, teams and leagues have been leading the way in responding to the needs of communities across the country and the world,” said Kevin Martinez, vice president of ESPN Corporate Citizenship. “For six years, ESPN has been honored to telecast the Sports Humanitarian Awards, which highlights the impact that sports has to create social change, and we’re excited to carry that narrative through the ESPYS and our other platforms.”

This year’s nominees include (see below for descriptions on each award and finalist):

  • Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award presented by Dove Men+Care finalists: Nelson Cruz (MLB’s Minnesota Twins), Kevin Love (NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers), Devin and Jason McCourty (NFL’s New England Patriots), Maya Moore (WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx) and Titus O’Neil (WWE Superstar)
  • Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year finalists: Denver Broncos (NFL), Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB), New York City FC (MLS) and Sacramento Kings (NBA)
  • Corporate Community Impact Award finalists: Anthem Foundation, Burton Snowboards, Nike and the Peach Bowl

The Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award recipients will be announced the week of June 15, as will the recipient of a new honor, the Sports Philanthropist of the Year Award, which celebrates someone that is creating measurable social change through sports by using a comprehensive philanthropic funding strategy.

The Awards will once again benefit the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund at the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Additionally, ESPN will donate more than $1 million in charitable contributions on behalf of the award nominees and honorees. To date, $9.8 million has been donated to the community on behalf of the Sports Humanitarian Awards.

Multiple sports leagues and/or governing bodies including MLB, MLS, NBA, WNBA, NFL, NHL, UFC, USTA and WWE are sponsors of the Sports Humanitarian Awards and have nominated athletes, teams and corporations who are transforming lives and uplifting communities.

The finalists and winners have been determined by an independent selection committee, which includes: Nick Keller, Founder and President of Beyond Sport; Donald Lassere, CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center; Benita Fitzgerald Mosley, Olympic Gold Medalist, CEO and Sports Strategist; Sab Singh, Founder of Sports Doing Good and Professor of Sport Management at Farmingdale State College; Caryl Stern, Executive Director of the Walton Family Foundation; and Eli Wolff, Director of the Power of Sport Lab.

Below are the award descriptions, as well as details about the nominees and honorees for the 2020 Sports Humanitarian Awards.

MUHAMMAD ALI SPORTS HUMANITARIAN AWARD presented by Dove Men+Care

The Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award is given to an athlete whose continuous, demonstrated leadership has created a measured positive impact on their community through sports. The candidate must embrace the core principles that Muhammad Ali embodied so well, including confidence, conviction, dedication, giving and respect. The winner will be able to direct a $100,000 grant from ESPN to the qualified charity related to the award-winning humanitarian efforts. The finalists will be able to direct a $25,000 grant to the charity related to their award-winning efforts.

All nominees will be featured in ESPN studio shows the week of June 15. The winner will be announced during The 2020 ESPYS on June 21.

Nelson Cruz, Minnesota Twins

Six-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz has completely transformed the safety and welfare of his hometown (Las Matas De Santa Cruz) in the Dominican Republic. Thanks to Cruz, the town has a fire engine and an ambulance to treat and transport people to the hospital, which is nearly one hour away. He built a new police station to replace the plywood shack structure and donated a motorcycle for the police officers, who previously had to walk. Annually, Cruz brings dentists and optometrists to his hometown’s local clinic to provide checkups, medicine and eyewear. His health event with volunteer doctors, and donated equipment and medicine, enabled more than 1,200 people to be evaluated and treated. He has purchased wheelchairs, crutches, walkers and canes for elderly and disabled residents. Cruz’s Boomstick23 Foundation also has laid the groundwork for a new education and technical center to help young people learn how to advance their employability by learning trades such as carpentry or electrical, and how to better use farmland to produce crops. Additionally, his Healing Venezuela initiative helps 2,000 Venezuelan newborns annually receive life-sustaining nourishment during their first year (a 400% increase since Cruz became involved).

Kevin Love, Cleveland Cavaliers

After publicly sharing his own battle with anxiety and depression, Kevin Love has committed to normalizing the conversation around mental health. As soon as Love bravely used his voice, he inspired others to follow suit, sharing their own struggles as well. Teammates and fans responded with words of support and encouragement. He regularly engages with children who suffer from depression and anxiety and find encouragement in his story. Through the Kevin Love Fund (KLF), he’s developing an education curriculum designed to destigmatize challenges with mental health and to model the presence of emotion as an important dimension of the human experience, with a goal of reaching millions of students. The KLF also is endowing a Research Chair at UCLA that will empower eminent UCLA psychologists working to revolutionize treatments for anxiety and depression and give hope to millions of sufferers around the world.

Devin and Jason McCourty, New England Patriots

The McCourty twins feel strongly that too many kids with great potential get stuck with juvenile records at a very young age. In many cases, this marks the children for failure later on in life. Devin has been a passionate advocate for criminal justice reform at the Massachusetts State House. Thanks to his leadership, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed a bill to increase the age at which children can be charged in juvenile court from 7-years old to 12-years old. When his brother Jason joined the Patriots, together they urged lawmakers to raise the age of adult court jurisdiction from 18 to 19, a move that the bill established a task force to study. They also are working together to address disparities in educational funding. Thanks to their leadership, the Massachusetts Legislature passed a bill that will invest $1.5 billion in the Massachusetts public education system over the next seven years, focusing primarily on underfunded schools with low-income students.

Maya Moore, Minnesota Lynx

One of the most decorated basketball players in the history of the game, Maya Moore was the reigning WNBA All-Star Game MVP and four-time WNBA champion when she stepped away from the game in her prime to pursue finding justice for Jonathan Irons, who as a minor in 1993 had been sentenced to 50 years in prison for burglary and assault. Her story is one of selfless dedication, faith and pursuit of truth. She made the decision to use her platform to raise awareness for Iron’s case and the need to entirely re-imagine what “winning” means in our criminal justice system. She gave a voice to the voiceless by speaking at schools and the Congressional Black Caucus, joining The Marshall Project’s panel What’s The Story, and launching a nationwide petition through Change.org and her initiative, Win With Justice, that gained over 125,000 signatures. Moore’s goal was to gain freedom for Irons, and while Iron’s continues to persevere through a multi-layered appeals process, she recently achieved a huge milestone in that journey: his conviction was recently overturned by a Jefferson City judge, who claimed the initial convictions to be weak, circumstantial and marked with inconsistencies.

Titus O’Neil, WWE Superstar

WWE Superstar Titus O’Neil is an accomplished athlete, global entertainer and philanthropist. He grew up in poverty, labeled a “bad kid” who would be dead or in jail by the time he was 16. People invested in him when they had nothing to gain in return. As a result, he graduated from the University of Florida with academic and athletic accolades. O’Neil has made it his mission to create change for those in need. He supports thousands of individuals through various nonprofits including Susan G. Komen, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Special Olympics. Through his Bullard Family Foundation, in partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools, he’s transforming Sligh Middle Magnet School and the surrounding area in Tampa, Fla. into an innovative education and community hub to create lasting generational change. This includes a first-class gym for school staff, a multi-million-dollar track and turf field for community health and wellness and a prosperity center offering support services to lift families out of poverty.

SPORTS HUMANITARIAN TEAM OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Sports Humanitarian Team Award represents a sports club/team that demonstrates how teamwork can create a measurable impact on a community or cause.

Denver Broncos

Under the leadership of President & CEO Joe Ellis, the Denver Broncos are committed to a culture of service through innovative programming with players, coaches, staff and alumni. The Broncos are the only professional sports team to fully fund its own branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, giving more than 15,000 youth a home away from home since it opened in 2003. Seventy-seven percent of those club members earn mostly A’s and B’s in school with senior club members graduating from high school at a rate 20% higher than the local average. The Broncos also invest in Futures Football, a spring tackle program for middle school students within Denver and Aurora Public Schools. Fully funded by Denver Broncos Charities, this program provides high school coaching, updated equipment and on-going character development training. Denver Public Schools has seen more than a 25% increase in football participation since the program’s inception. Broncos players are the most visible part of the team’s charitable endeavors with 120 different team members participating in voluntary community events in 2019 alone. Since 2017, Broncos’ player service hours have increased by 79% to more than 1,750 hours across team and personal initiatives.

Los Angeles Dodgers

In Los Angeles, one out of every five people lives at or below the poverty line. The goal of the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) is to be bigger than baseball, envisioning a city where every Angeleno, regardless of zip code, has the opportunity to thrive. Through direct programs and grants to nonprofits, LADF tackles the most pressing problems facing Los Angeles with a mission to improve education, health care, homelessness, and social justice for all Angelenos. Through Dodgers RBI, LADF
has increased access to health care and educational resources to over 10,000 youth, with a specific emphasis on African American youth and girls. The program helped 97% of the players, ages 9 to 18, succeed in social-emotional learning development. Another key program, the “Dodgers Reading Champions” online reading challenge of LA Reads, has engaged 16,000 students across 1,075 schools, enabling young readers to read a total of 1.5 million minutes last year. Their Dodgers Dreamfields program has helped to build or refurbish 51 baseball and softball fields in underserved communities, providing 368,000 youth access to safe, playable fields in their own neighborhoods. In 2019, LADF unveiled its second universally accessible Dodgers Dreamfield helping over 3,000 youth with special needs to safely play on an adaptive field.

New York City Football Club

New York City Football Club (NYCFC) together with its foundation, City in the Community (CITC), delivers free health and STEM education programs in over 80 public schools and community-based organizations across New York City serving over 5,000 youth annually. Their Saturday Night Lights crime prevention program offers soccer during peak crime hours, while also providing academic support and college and career pathways. NYCFC also funds, trains and inspires young leaders through its Youth Leadership Council (YLC). Last year, YLC members created a summer program and supported the training and development of community coaches. In 2019, the Club opened nine mini-pitches, contributing to the total of 29 pitches that they’ve built to date as part of New York City Soccer Initiative (NYCSI). A third-party study found that CITC sees a $4.50 social return for every $1 invested in programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, CITC adapted core programs to run virtually and helped donate over 143,000 meals to New York City communities in the South Bronx.

Sacramento Kings

After Sacramento was devastated by the tragic shooting of an unarmed black man, Stephon Clark, by police in March 2018, Sacramento Kings owner, Vivek Ranadivé heard the cries for action and committed that the team would work alongside the community to prevent future tragedies. The team created a multi-year partnership with Build.Black., a coalition formed to transform Black communities with deep investment in Black youth. Over the last two years, Kings players and staff have participated in youth healing forums, STEM education and mentoring workshops, and a co-ed youth basketball league, all focused on using sport as an agent for change. The Kings also partnered with the Milwaukee Bucks to host Team Up for Change, a first-of-its-kind, daylong summit designed to address social justice issues. Together with Build.Black, the team has held more than 40 events and hosted nearly 2,500 area youth associated with the coalition, transforming the lives of countless youth across the city. The Kings also visited Folsom State Prison to tip off a series of basketball games and thoughtful conversations between incarcerated persons, players and coaches aimed at breaking down stigmas associated with individuals, disproportionately people of color and the poor, who are impacted by the criminal justice system.

CORPORATE COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD

The Corporate Community Impact Award recognizes a corporation that utilizes their business platform and the power of sports to help advance a social issue, cause or community organization. The winner will be able to direct a $100,000 grant from ESPN to the qualified charity related to the award-winning humanitarian efforts. The finalists will be able to direct a $25,000 grant to the charity related to their award-winning efforts.

All nominees will be recognized during ESPN studio shows and the winner will be announced the week of June 15.

Anthem Foundation

With one in three children overweight or obese in the United States, the Anthem Foundation created the Anthem Health Champion program in an effort to create greater public awareness and funding for the pressing health challenges faced by their customers and communities. The program, which focuses on enabling healthy and active lifestyles, pediatric cancer, empowerment of girls in sports, swim safety and improving self-esteem and fitness, is working with sports’ most admired healthy role models to spread messaging on the importance of staying active. Since its inception, they have helped 16 million kids combat childhood obesity through the holistic Triple Play program, put fitness centers in 66 elementary schools which ultimately has brought physical fitness to more than 35,000 children, provided 3,500 at-risk youth with water safety lessons and paired 100+ elite and collegiate athletes with girls of color between to inspire involvement in sports and in-person mentoring.

Burton Snowboards

In the United States there is a vulnerable segment of youth who do not have access to outdoor opportunities, and consequently limits their ability to access experiences beyond their own challenging environments and step away from their daily norms. The Chill Foundation was founded by the owners of Burton Snowboards, Donna Carpenter, and the late Jake Burton Carpenter. Chill was created to provide access to boardsports for youth who would not otherwise have the opportunity, providing them year-round programming to snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, and stand up paddleboarding lessons at no cost. The youth-development program also addresses the inequalities around access to boardsports, as well as the potential for personal growth and development, while focusing on the resiliency of the participants to help them transfer many of their new skills and ideas to different circumstances they may face. Through Chill, boardsports have become a vehicle for self-empowerment and overcoming obstacles for more than 25,000 young people since the program started, impacting 3,000 youth in 16 cities across North America this year.

Nike

Nike believes all kids are made to play. The reality, though, is that only one in five kids around the world gets the physical activity they need to become healthier, happier and more successful in and school and in life. The Nike Community Ambassador program tackles this issue by giving Nike store employees around the world the opportunity to share their love of sport with the next generation. Last year more than 5,400 store employees in 24 countries served as Nike Community Ambassadors, volunteering as coaches in their local communities to help get kids playing so they can reach their full potential.

Peach Bowl, Inc.

Only 4% of National Institutes of Health federal funding for cancer research each year benefits childhood cancer according to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, making it nearly impossible to launch clinical trials that will create new cancer drugs and treatment options for kids. To address this need, Peach Bowl, Inc. announced a $20 million gift to the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to create the Peach Bowl LegACy Fund, named in honor of Anna Charles “AC” Hollis, daughter of a Peach Bowl, Inc. employee who died after a courageous five-month fight with the disease. The fund is dedicated to ensuring novel, high-priority cancer drugs, devices and treatment strategies can be tested in patients at an accelerated pace. In 2019, the Peach Bowl LegACy Fund announced the first five new clinical trials led by oncologists at the Aflac Cancer Center. Additionally, the annual Peach Bowl Touchdowns for Children’s has inspired college football fans to help tackle cancer by pledging donations for every touchdown scored by their favorite team during the season. Peach Bowl, Inc. matches every dollar raised by fans throughout the entire college football season, which culminated in a record $518,922 additional gift following the 2019 season.

V Foundation Announces 2019 V Scholar Summit

The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, is excited to announce the fourth annual V Scholar Summit was held April 30 through May 1, 2019 in Rochester, Minn. The two-day summit included hands-on training with the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, informative sessions with experts and scientific advisors, Q&A sessions and collaboration with other researchers. Participants of the 2019 V Scholar Summit came from 23 different cancer centers across the nation.

“Effective science communication happens when we listen and connect. It happens when we use empathy,” said Alan Alda, actor, director, screenwriter, comedian, author and inspiration for the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. “Communication is headed for success when we pay more attention to what the other person is understanding rather than focusing solely on what we want to say.”

The V Scholar Grant is a two-year grant of $100,000 per year. It supports young, tenure-track faculty early in their cancer research careers by funding projects that are either laboratory-based fundamental research or translational research. The V Foundation orchestrates the event to teach scientists how to develop clear, authentic and empathetic communication skills to convey complex topics regarding the advancements in cancer research and the impact it has on society, when interacting with media, patients and others outside their own discipline.

“The V Scholar Summit is a wonderful opportunity for us to support our V Scholars beyond the grant dollars,” said Carole Wegner, Ph.D., HCLD, Senior Vice President, Research and Grants Administration, the V Foundation. “The Summit supports crucial career skills like science communication and grant writing but also allows our early career scientists to form a strong community of scientists who can then more easily make new research connections and build collaborations, which accelerates cancer research. Cancer research is a team effort, and this event helps us build stronger teams.”

This year’s keynote speaker was Jamie Valvano, daughter of Jim Valvano. Jamie is a breast cancer survivor, who inherited the BRCA 2 gene from her father. Jamie shared how cancer research not only helped her survive, but thrive despite a terrifying diagnosis. Mayo Clinic Cancer Center was the host sponsor of the V Scholar Summit, with ESPN and SunTrust also sponsoring the event. The V Foundation has proudly awarded more than $225 million for cutting-edge cancer research. The V Foundation holds a 4-star (highest) rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities, and is among the top 3% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation is a GuideStar Platinum charity.

Virginia Vine Raises More Than $250,000 for Cancer Research

Virginia Vine Raises More Than $250,000 for Cancer Research

The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, announces the third annual Virginia Vine event raised more than $250,000 to help achieve victory over cancer.  The sold-out gala was held at Boxwood Estate Winery on April 8 and hosted by Joe Theismann, former quarterback of the Super Bowl XVII Champion Washington Redskins, with featured speaker Scott Hamilton, Olympic champion, cancer survivor and activist.  The funds raised will support Virginia’s world-class cancer research institutions as well as groundbreaking research projects across the country.

“Only three years old, the V Foundation Virginia Vine event has really hit stride!  A remarkable group of individuals has led us to a new level of awareness, fund-raising and friendship,” said Susan Braun, CEO of the V Foundation.  “We are so grateful to our volunteers, to the Governor’s office and to Virginia’s three cancer center partners for bringing education to the public and funds to cancer research.”

To reinforce the urgency and momentum behind research today, the V Foundation held a Cancer Research Symposium at the Salamander Resort & Spa.  Joseph Moore, M.D., Medical Director of the Duke Raleigh Cancer Center and Professor of Hematology and Oncology at Duke Cancer Center, led the discussion.  A member of the V Foundation’s world-renowned Scientific Advisory Committee and primary oncologist of the late Jim Valvano, Moore also explained the V Foundation’s grant-making process.  Under the direction of the Scientific Advisory Committee, Virginia Vine’s presenting sponsors – Inova Schar Cancer Institute, University of Virginia Health System Cancer Center and VCU Massey Cancer Center – will each nominate their most competitive research studies to determine which institution will receive funds raised through Virginia Vine.  A scientist from each research center participated in the symposium, sharing specifics on the important work happening in the Commonwealth.

“The night was perfect, the food was fabulous, and Scott Hamilton gave such a moving presentation,” said Theismann. “With everybody’s help, we believe we will defeat cancer, and the V Foundation will help lead the way.”

Throughout the evening, the Virginia Vine gala showcased outstanding wine, culinary delights and one-of-a-kind auction items.  A cocktail reception was followed by a seated dinner with Boxwood wine parings.  Theismann and the Honorable Todd P. Haymore, Secretary of Commerce and Trade, Commonwealth of Virginia, welcomed supporters.  Braun emphasized how research is transforming the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer prior to introducing the presenting sponsors and gala sponsor, McGuireWoods.  Hamilton, a cancer and pituitary brain tumor survivor, followed Braun on stage, echoing her message while sharing his personal journey and determination to eradicate the disease.

The V Foundation is in the midst of a campaign, Not a Moment to Lose, aiming to raise $200 million by 2020.  The campaign is strategically focused on emerging, high-impact research opportunities to make the greatest advances in the shortest amount of time.  Areas of scientific research to be funded include the study of prevention signals, clinical trials, immunotherapy pathways, big data collaborations, convergence projects, pediatric cancer and translational research.  Through its partners and fundraising efforts, including Virginia Vine, the V Foundation has already raised nearly $120 million towards its goal.

Record Fundraising Announced for ESPN’s 2016 Jimmy V Week Campaign

Record Fundraising Announced for ESPN’s 2016 Jimmy V Week Campaign

ESPN’s 2016 Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research celebrated its 10th year and set a new record, raising more than $3.8 million for the V Foundation for Cancer Research – more than $600,000 over last year’s total. This year’s campaign ran from Nov. 30-Dec. 9.  Over the past 10 years, Jimmy V Week fundraising totals over $17.6 million for cancer research.

As a result of the awareness ESPN’s programming has brought the V Foundation to sponsors and sport fans, the Goldberg Family, BRCA Foundation and Basser Initiative at the Gray Foundation were inspired to make a $3 million challenge during the Jimmy V Men’s Classic on Dec. 6, which aims to be matched by the V Foundation in 2017. The commitment will fund further study of BRCA genes that, when mutated, can increase individuals risk of cancer.

Over $300,000 was raised for the John Saunders Grant for Pediatric Cancer Research including a $100,000 grant from ESPN. The John Saunders grant was established in memory of the late ESPN anchor and founding V Foundation board member, John Saunders, who suddenly passed away on Aug. 10, 2016.

“ESPN had a record breaking year, as the programming around V Week continues to resonate with fans who understand the urgency of finding a cure for cancer,” said Kevin Martinez, ESPN vice president of Corporate Citizenship. “There was a 42 percent increase in direct donations by fans who are inspired by Jim Valvano’s speech and the incredible stories of cancer patients and caregivers.”

“The V Foundation is delighted with the reach and fundraising success of V Week,” said Susan Braun, CEO of the V Foundation. “Everyone at ESPN and each person who watched and made a donation contributed to that success!  And ultimately, the winner is cancer research, which is the means of saving lives. Our deep gratitude to all!”

The week opened with the annual simulcast of Jim Valvano’s iconic 1993 ESPYS speech across ESPN networks, with excerpts from other exceptional ESPY speeches from Robin Roberts, Craig Sager and Stuart Scott. Integration on Monday Night Football, NBA on ESPN and college sports programming, plus features, vignettes and testimonials, public service announcements and social media activation to drive donations.

The campaign included the annual Jimmy V Women’s and Men’s Basketball Classics Presented by Corona – featuring four-time defending national champion UConn defeating then-No.14 Texas 74-52 on December 4, as well as four top men’s programs in the men’s event on December 6 – then-No. 17 Purdue topping Arizona State 97-64 and then-No. 21 Florida falling 84-74 to then-No. 5 Duke.

On top of the generosity of individual donors, more than one million dollars was presented at the Jimmy V Men’s & Women’s Basketball Classics from Corona, Hooters, WWE and the New York Road Runners which helped push the total well over $3 million.

The V Foundation Observes Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

The V Foundation Observes Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, is observing Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month this September. Since its inception, the V Foundation has awarded $30 million in pediatric cancer research grants. Just four percent of federal cancer research funding is dedicated to pediatric cancer. With the help of partners, the V Foundation is making a significant impact in finding cures for the leading cause of death by disease in American children.

While some childhood cancer survival rates have dramatically improved, others remain very low. Nearly 2,000 children die of cancer each year in the U.S., inspiring the V Foundation and its partners in their work to end the dreaded disease.

The V Foundation’s increased commitment to pediatric cancer research is championed by the efforts of its longtime Board Member and ESPN Hall of Fame Sportscaster Dick Vitale. Earlier this year, the 13th Annual Dick Vitale Gala raised a record-breaking $3.7 million for pediatric cancer research, bringing the total raised from the event to more than $25 million.

“There has been nothing that occupies my mind more over the past decade than pediatric cancer awareness and research,” said Vitale. “I have been extensively involved in raising dollars to help kids battling cancer. It is vital that we are united as a TEAM to lend a helping hand to so many youngsters that are confronted with this vicious disease. Our support is mandatory. Let’s all give 110% in pursuit of the goal to beat cancer.”

The V Foundation has also teamed up with WWE and is in the third year of a partnership with Connor’s Cure. Founded by WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon and WWE Executive Vice President Talent, Live Events & Creative Paul “Triple H” Levesque, Connor’s Cure was established in honor of an 8-year-old WWE fan, Connor Michalek, who battled medulloblastoma, a rare tumor that affects the brain and spinal cord. The V Foundation’s Virginia Vine event, held earlier this year, benefitted Connor’s Cure, raising nearly $500,000.

“Finding a cure for pediatric cancer will take everyone’s help. WWE and Connor’s Cure are proud to team up with the V Foundation to raise the funds needed to support the cutting-edge research that will one day find a cure for pediatric cancer,” said McMahon.

Additionally, WWE and O.A.R. united to raise awareness and funds for Connor’s Cure through O.A.R.’s Just Like Paradise tour this summer. Through O.A.R.’s Heard The World Fund, the Just Like Paradise tour benefits Connor’s Cure, with a minimum contribution of $50,000 for pediatric cancer research.

An avid supporter throughout the years, ESPN television and radio personality Mike Greenberg and his wife, Stacy, are donating 100% of all author proceeds from their newest children’s book, MVP: Most Valuable Puppy, to pediatric cancer research through the V Foundation.

“Stacy and I were moved beyond words by the passion Dick Vitale showed for the cause of pediatric cancer research at his gala, and disheartened by the statistics regarding funding,” said Greenberg. “We are proud to donate every penny we receive from MVP to combat pediatric cancer; no one deserves the sincere efforts for a cure more than children and their families.”

In addition to these events and partners, Apple Gold Group has raised more than $1.4 million since 2006 for pediatric cancer through its “March Hoops” fundraiser. And Bristol-Myers Squibb has donated $2.5 million that the V Foundation has invested for the advancement of pediatric immuno-oncology research.
