More than $21 Million Awarded by the V Foundation for Cancer Research in 2021

All-Time Grant Total Nearly $290 Million

Cary, N.C. [November 15, 2021] –The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, has awarded grants worth more than $21 million for cutting-edge cancer research in 2021. The total grant funding by the Foundation has now reached nearly $290 million.

Each year, the Foundation invites NCI-designated cancer centers nationwide to nominate researchers for each grant category, Translational and V Scholar, for funding consideration. The V Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), made up of world-class researchers from leading cancer centers, reviews and recommends the most promising projects for funding. This rigorous process ensures proposals meet the highest standards of scientific merit.

“After many difficult months during which the COVID-19 pandemic affected not just fundraising but also disrupted research at many institutions, we are delighted to report a strong funding year to drive critical cancer research forward and nurture young research talent through these difficult times,” said Carole Wegner, Ph.D., senior vice president of research and grants administration.

The V Foundation awarded 18 Translational grants and 37 V Scholar grants in 2021. Translational grants are a three-year commitment of $200,000 per year. These grants support “bench to bedside” research, whose endpoint is often planning or initiation of a clinical trial. V Scholar grants provide researchers with $200,000 of funding over a two-year commitment and are awarded to innovative young scientists establishing their research careers.

A total of $3.7 million was awarded through the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund in 2021. The Stuart Scott Fund was created in 2015 in memory of beloved ESPN sportscaster Stuart Scott. Scott was a cancer research advocate, especially for minority populations, even before his own cancer diagnosis. The Fund is dedicated to reducing inequalities in both cancer care and cancer research, as well as supporting early career researchers from underrepresented minorities.

A total of $5 million was awarded through the Dick Vitale Fund for Pediatric Cancer. Funded studies include research for brain, blood and bone cancers, among others. Nearly $60 million has been awarded through the fund named for V Foundation board member Dick Vitale, a tireless champion for pediatric cancer research.

The Translational research project that receives one of the highest ratings by the SAC is annually designated as the Nick Valvano Translational Research Grant.  Nick Valvano, Jim Valvano’s brother, served as CEO for 13 years and has been a V Foundation Board Member since 1993. This year, Steven Reiner, M.D., from Columbia University, received the distinction.

“Support from the V Foundation for our research will be transformative,” said Reiner. “When we began studying blood samples from cancer patients, we quickly realized the test we developed might predict which patients will respond to immunotherapy, something important to patients and their doctors. I am honored to receive the Nick Valvano Translational Research Grant, which could help make immunotherapy even more effective for a greater number of cancer patients.”

An additional Translational research project receiving one of the highest ratings by the SAC is annually designated as the Bob Bast Translational Research Grant. Bob Bast, M.D., chaired the V Foundation’s SAC for over 20 years and continues to serve on the SAC and V Foundation board. Shivani Srivastava, Ph.D., from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, received the honor.

Andrew Venteicher, M.D., Ph.D., from Masonic Cancer Center, and Yuxuan Miao, Ph.D., from the University of Chicago, tied for the Martin D. Abeloff Scholar Award, recognizing the highest reviewer-scored V Scholar grant recipient.

The V Foundation holds 10 consecutive 4-star (highest) ratings from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities, making the Foundation among the top 2% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation is also a GuideStar Platinum-rated charity.

Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer Riders Raise Over $1.67 Million for Cancer Research

Bristol Myers Squibb Adds $1 Million for Total of Over $2.67 Million to the V Foundation for Cancer Research

Cary, N.C. [October 13, 2021] – The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, is thrilled to announce Bristol Myers Squibb’s 2021 Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer record-breaking riders raised over $1.67 million for cancer research. Additionally, Bristol Myers Squibb doubled its planned match, adding $1 million for a total of over $2.67 million raised for cancer research funded through the V Foundation.

Participating in the ride were a record 18 teams featuring over 230 Bristol Myers Squibb employees. The teams followed two separate routes, both beginning in Cannon Beach, Ore., and coming together again in Long Branch, N.J. Each team, mostly comprised of novice cyclists, covered approximately 240 miles in three days for a total of over 3,000 miles per route. On a path to achieve Victory Over Cancer®, riders were inspired by their close connections to cancer.

Nancy Eavy, a breast cancer survivor and mother of two, rode in this year’s ride from Denver to Kansas City. “I was honored to be a part of Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer this year with so many strong survivors and thrivers from the cancer community,” Eavy said. “We know much more than we did about cancer than we did when I was a patient, but there’s still so much we don’t know. Research plays a pivotal role, and we must continue funding.”

“Bristol Myers Squibb’s support of the V Foundation is incredibly valued by our employees, their friends, and family, because they know that every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research,” said Adam Lenkowsky, senior vice president and general manager of U.S. Cardiovascular, Immunology and Oncology. “After five months of training and fundraising, our riders set a new record in funds raised for the cause. We hope this effort continues to raise awareness about the importance of research for the future of cutting-edge treatments for those with cancer.”

Proceeds from Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer enable the V Foundation to invest in even more potential breakthrough cancer research nationwide. Including the funds raised from the riders, since 2015, Bristol Myers Squibb has provided nearly $15 million in charitable donations to the V Foundation to support multiple research initiatives.

“I am in awe of the dedication displayed by every single one of these riders. Whether riding up a mountain or persevering through strong crosswinds, they showed the kind of determination that can stop cancer,” said Shane Jacobson, chief executive officer of the V Foundation. “They spent many months training and fundraising. We are so proud of them and are grateful to work with them and Bristol Myers Squibb toward a common goal – defeating cancer.”

The V Foundation Kicks Off Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month Campaign

Fundraising from Partners to Benefit the Dick Vitale Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research

Raleigh, NC [September 8, 2021] – The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, is recognizing Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month by highlighting the need for pediatric cancer research funding through a spotlight on events, partnerships, grants, thrivers and researchers with a goal of stopping childhood cancers. The month-long campaign, in conjunction with long-time partners Dick Vitale and WWE®, highlights the critical need to fund research dedicated to improving treatments, outcomes and quality of life for children with cancer. Cancer is the leading cause of death from disease among children over the age of 1 in the U.S.; however, federal funding is minimal, so private funding from organizations like the V Foundation is vital. The V Foundation has awarded nearly $55 million for pediatric cancer research.

“Pediatrics research is something that is so dear to my heart,” said Dick Vitale, longtime V Foundation board member. “I am so proud that my Gala alone has already raised $44 million to help kids battling cancer. Join my team, and help us reach our goal of raising $50 million through the Gala by May 6, the date of the 17th annual Dick Vitale Gala.”

The V Foundation raises funds for pediatric cancer research year-round through initiatives like:

  • The annual Dick Vitale Gala: The May 2021 event was a star-studded evening with celebrities and athletes that raised $6.5 million for pediatric cancer research. Next year’s honorees are sports stars Keyshawn Johnson, Chris Evert and Scott Drew. Visit org to learn more.
  • ‘Dribble for Victory Over Cancer,’ a national event series that will unite universities and communities in the fight to end childhood cancer. Individuals, families, clubs and teams will raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer by dribbling through short on-campus courses across the country. Proceeds will benefit cancer research nationwide through the Dick Vitale Fund for Pediatric Cancer.

Vitale, famous for his unflappable energy, has made it his life’s mission to stop pediatric cancer. He donates his book proceeds to the cause, has formed partnerships to raise as much money as possible, and regularly visits with children facing cancer. The Fund in his honor recognizes his invaluable contribution to saving children’s lives.

“I want to thank Mr. Vitale for everything he does to fight for us kids,” said 13-year-old leukemia survivor Enzo Grande. “Just like Mr. Vitale, I want to raise money for pediatric cancer research so kids don’t have to worry about whether or not they will make it. We just want cancer to go away.”

The V Foundation and WWE are in the sixth year of their partnership to raise money for pediatric cancer research through Connor’s Cure. This September, WWE is raising funds for Connor’s Cure through:

  • The Connor’s Cure Superstar Challenge honoring Connor Michalek, an 8-year-old WWE fan who battled medulloblastoma, a rare tumor that affects the brain and spinal cord. Participants can walk or run any time or place during the month with no set distance or donation required. To learn more or to register, visit org/superstarchallenge.
  • NFFC Fantasy Football with WWE Superstars The Miz, Kofi Kingston, actor James Roday Rodriguez and Sports Illustrated Senior Fantasy Analyst Michael Fabiano. Each personality will manage a team in separate NFFC Primetime leagues and donate their prize money, with league champions earning $7,000 and a grand prize of $200,000. The Miz and Roday will also donate $1,000 to the V Foundation for any team that finishes ahead of them in their final league standings.
  • Wicked Cutz, a premium beef jerky producer, has created a new bacon-flavored beef jerky and will donate 100% of net proceeds in September to Connor’s Cure.

WWE’s Superstars of Tomorrow campaign will run across their global media assets including television, digital and social media platforms, along with WWE Shop merchandise and a virtual auction program to raise funds.

“Partnering with the V Foundation through Connor’s Cure the past six years to support pediatric cancer research has enabled us to raise more than $3.5 million and help over 500 families around the world,” said Stephanie McMahon, WWE Chief Brand Officer. “This month, we will combine our forces yet again to raise funds through a variety of initiatives and won’t stop until we find a cure.”

The V Foundation holds a 4-star (highest) rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities, and is among the top 2% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation is a GuideStar platinum-rated charity. For more information about the V Foundation’s Dick Vitale Fund for Pediatric Cancer or to donate, please visit v.org.

The V Foundation and Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation Launch ‘Dribble for Victory Over Cancer’

Basketball Program Unites Universities and Communities to End Childhood Cancer Through Vitale Pediatric Fund

Cary, NC [August 5, 2021] –The V Foundation for Cancer Research and Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation are partnering to launch Dribble for Victory Over Cancer, a national event series uniting universities and communities to end childhood cancer. Individuals, families, clubs and teams will raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research while dribbling through short on-campus courses and engaging in other activities. Participants will have the opportunity to meet college basketball players, coaches and alumni. Proceeds will support research for childhood cancers through the Dick Vitale Fund for Pediatric Cancer at the V Foundation.

Dribble for Victory Over Cancer expands on an existing successful community program founded by Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation and hosted by UCLA and St. John’s University. Since 2008, the two universities have collectively raised over $2 million for pediatric cancer research, giving kids and their families battling cancer a chance for brighter tomorrows. Participating college men’s and women’s teams will host Dribble events at their schools in early fall, prior to the start of the basketball season.

“Over the past 30 years, I’ve been inspired by so many courageous children who’ve battled cancer. Cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death for children over one year old, yet only minimal federal funding is directed to pediatric cancer research,” said V Foundation Board Member and ESPN Sports Commentator Dick Vitale. “Bringing the Dribble program to leading universities is a great way for men’s and women’s teams to have a huge impact on kids fighting this terrible disease.”

More than 15,000 U.S. children and adolescents are diagnosed each year with cancer. The Vitale Pediatric Fund has awarded nearly $55 million in grants to the nation’s best researchers working to reduce the long-term and harsh side effects of cancer and its treatments, create gentler therapies explicitly designed for kids and to give the precious gift of more time to children suffering from cancer. Private funding of pediatric research has become critical.

“We’re fighting for the future of kids with cancer,” Jeri Wilson, Executive Director, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. “We hope and expect the partnership with the V Foundation and Dick Vitale will add national star power and visibility to the Dribble events, igniting public engagement and contributions for research.”

The V Foundation funds game-changing research and all-star scientists to accelerate victory over cancer and save lives. Currently holding 10 consecutive 4-star (highest) ratings from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities, the Foundation is among the top 2% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation is also a GuideStar Platinum-rated charity. For more information on Dribble for Victory Over Cancer or the Dick Vitale Fund for Pediatric Cancer please visit v.org/dribble.

“Funding for cancer research has been down across the board this year due to the wide range of needs from the pandemic, yet it remains one of the leading causes of death in the U.S.,” said Kevin Martinez, ESPN’s vice president of  Corporate Citizenship. “We remain committed to our long-standing tradition of raising funds for cancer research, especially for those who are disproportionately affected through the Stuart Scott Fund.”

Upcoming initiatives include:

During his inspirational speech, Jim announced the formation of the V Foundation. For 28 years, ESPN has partnered with the V Foundation to highlight the impact of funding life-saving cancer research.

The V Foundation and Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy Announce Partnership to Co-Fund Grants

Annual V Wine Celebration to Kick Off Collaboration Efforts through Immunotherapy Fund-A-Need

Cary, NC [May 11, 2021] — The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, has partnered with the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy (PICI) to advance immunotherapy research. The partnership kicks off during the 23rd annual V Foundation Wine Celebration, to be held August 5-8, 2021, in Napa Valley, CA. The Fund-A-Need, a targeted fundraising effort focused on a particular area of research, will be dedicated to immunotherapy. The V Foundation will co-fund with PICI up to four Parker Bridge Fellows grants for early career researchers, which are three years in duration. The goal is to raise $2.8 million at the Wine Celebration to support this program.

“We are delighted to partner with PICI to focus on immunotherapy in 2021 because this treatment approach could apply to all cancers which is fundamental to the V Foundation’s efforts to conquer cancer in all its forms, at every stage of life,” said Carole Wegner, Ph.D., HCLD, senior vice president of Research and Grants Administration at the V Foundation. “Together, with PICI, we are working to bring our vision of victory over cancer closer to reality every single day.”

The Parker Bridge Fellows grant program was one of the first initiatives PICI founded following its launch in 2016. The goal is to empower the most ambitious early career researchers to pursue their boldest ideas to transform the immunotherapy landscape for cancer patients. In addition to funding, the program involves a mentored training period and an independent faculty research support period. This collaborative framework connects scientists with world-renowned researchers, as well as data and infrastructure to solve the toughest problems in the cancer immunotherapy space. Through partnerships like this one, PICI has bridged the gap between academia and industry, co-funded novel research, enabled unprecedented data sharing and streamlined study design and patient accrual on national clinical trials.

“PICI is founded on the belief that we are strongest when we work together, and we’re always grateful for the chance to collaborate with like-minded organizations who share our commitment to supporting the brightest rising stars in the field,” said Lisa Butterfield, Ph.D., vice president of PICI Research and Development. “These early-career researchers are working on game-changing ideas that can lead to new treatments and improve patient responses, boosting our efforts to turn all cancers into curable diseases.”

The Wine Celebration activities will be hosted by Duke University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski, V Foundation Board Member and ESPN “SportsCenter” Anchor Sage Steele, and ESPN College Basketball Analyst Jay Bilas. From the gala dinner and live auction, to the Answer for Cancer symposium and ‘Rock the V’ party, the event is expected to host about 450 guests and will feature CNN Commentator Paul Begala as the guest speaker.

16th Annual Dick Vitale Gala Raises Over $5M for Pediatric Cancer Research

Event Supports Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund at the V Foundation for Cancer Research

Cary, NC [May 07, 2021] — The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, and ESPN Hall of Fame Sportscaster Dick Vitale are pleased to announce the 16th Annual Dick Vitale Gala has raised $5 million for pediatric cancer research. Held on May 7 at the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, the Gala hosted supporters and celebrities to further groundbreaking advancements in childhood cancer research. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in American children over one year old.

“I am ecstatic over the support we have received during this challenging year,” said Vitale. “We are proud to have hosted some big-time celebrities and honorees. On behalf of my team at Mary Kenealy Events and my wife Lorraine, I can’t tell you how appreciative we are of so many people that help kids battling cancer. Through the generosity of our sponsors and supporters, we have now raised over $40 million through the Gala.”

This year’s event honored former University of Notre Dame Women’s Head Basketball Coach Muffet McGraw, University of Florida Head Football Coach Dan Mullen, Auburn University Men’s Head Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl and ESPN “SportsCenter” Anchor Scott Van Pelt. Vitale also recognized ESPN Senior NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen with the John Saunders V Foundation Courage Award. The night’s festivities included the announcement of winners from three sold-out raffles. Two winners took home a 2021 Mercedes-Benz and one won a 2021 BMW convertible.

“Our fight to achieve victory over pediatric cancer just took another big step forward,” said V Foundation Chief Executive Officer Shane Jacobson. “We deeply appreciate Dick Vitale’s passion for elevating resources in support of our youngest cancer patients and thank our honorees for their commitment to our mission. Tonight, our donors responded with impressive gifts, and we proved yet again that we are truly one team in our fight against cancer.”

Vitale continues to recruit celebrities in the fight against cancer, drawing dozens of stars to Sarasota for the event. Personalities in attendance included ESPN “SportsCenter” Anchor Kevin Negandhi; Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Bruce Arians; former Notre Dame football coach and sports analyst Lou Holtz; Baylor Men’s Head Basketball Coach Scott Drew; University of Texas basketball star Andrew Jones; professional aerialists, daredevils and acrobats Nik and Erendira Wallenda; ESPN Play-by-Play Commentator Rich Hollenberg; WWE superstar Titus O’Neil; Tampa Bay Buccaneers Quarterback Kyle Trask; and ESPN Announcer Chris Fowler.

Pediatric cancers occur in children and adolescents from 0-19 years old. While adults and children do share some cancer types, they are not treated for the disease in the same way. Because children are smaller and often still growing, they face unique challenges when diagnosed with cancer. More than 15,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed each year with cancer in the U.S. The number of children who die every year from cancer has decreased over the last 40+ years, but nearly 2,000 children still die from cancer each year. The V Foundation has awarded more than $55 million for research through the Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund.

The V Foundation holds 10 consecutive 4-star (highest) ratings from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities, making the Foundation among the top 2% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation is also a GuideStar Platinum-rated charity.
