A Game-Changing Partnership to Accelerate Cancer Research

National Hockey League (NHL), National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the V Foundation for Cancer Research Announce Game-Changing Partnership to Accelerate Cancer Research

Los Angeles, New York, Toronto (July 12, 2023) – The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), National Hockey League (NHL) and the V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated charity dedicated to funding innovative cancer research, are pleased to announce a strategic collaboration for the Hockey Fights Cancer™ initiative.

Hockey Fights Cancer is celebrating its 25th anniversary and has raised over $32 million since its inception for individuals and families affected by cancer. Through the combined strength of the NHL, NHLPA and V Foundation, the initiative will expand in the following ways:

  • Dramatically increasing the program’s pace of fundraising and potential for positive impact.
  • Ensuring the increased fundraising accelerates research conducted by the best scientists in the world who are working to achieve Victory Over Cancer®.
  • Sharing inspiring stories of survivorship from within the hockey community that underscore the vital importance of cancer research.

“The National Hockey League is extremely proud of the profound impact Hockey Fights Cancer has had on the lives of so many in our community over the last quarter century,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. “We are continually trying to innovate and improve our game on the ice and to strengthen our connections with our fans, and our fight against cancer is no exception. Our strategic collaboration with the V Foundation, our broadcast partner at ESPN and the NHLPA to grow Hockey Fights Cancer will create catalytic opportunities to advance research, support patients and ultimately save lives.”

Each November, the NHL, its Clubs and Players host Hockey Fights Cancer activations across North America, featuring unique storytelling and supporting local cancer charities as well as the American Cancer Society and Canadian Cancer Society.  NHL Clubs, Players, coaches, officials, employees, corporate partners, and fans come together to inspire hope and courage for those living with, going through, and moving past cancer.

“The Hockey Fights Cancer program is very meaningful to me, after fighting and surviving cancer as a young child myself, and knowing that cancer has affected so many families within the game,” said Marty Walsh, NHLPA Executive Director. “The Players are excited to join with the V Foundation to further enhance the funds we raise with the NHL, given our shared goals of improving the quality of life of those who live with cancer as well as advancing research towards conquering cancer.”

Over the past three decades, the V Foundation for Cancer Research has been laser focused on advancing cancer research for all cancer types. Since it was founded in 1993, 100% of all direct donations go directly to cancer research. To date, the V Foundation has funded more than $310 million in research grants at the 72 NCI-designated cancer centers, a select group of other (affiliated) state-of-the-art cancer research facilities in the US, and a few top-ranked Canadian centers.

“The V Foundation has remained steadfast in our mission to achieve Victory Over Cancer®, and together with the NHL, NHLPA, and Hockey Fights Cancer, we are furthering our ability to fund critical research that will support cancer patients and their families,” said Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation for Cancer Research. “The ESPYS stage holds tremendous significance for us, and as a founding partner, we are immensely grateful to ESPN for allowing us to announce this incredible partnership on such a meaningful platform in front of the world.”

More details on this unprecedented collaboration will be made available after the start of the 2023-24 NHL season.

Bristol Myers Squibb Employees Raise Over $1 Million While Completing Nearly 3,000 Mile Cross-Country Bike Relay

Bristol Myers Squibb Employees Raise Over $1 Million While Completing Nearly 3,000 Mile Cross-Country Bike Relay

Cary, N.C. [October 27, 2022] – Over 126 Bristol Myers Squibb employees have completed the company’s 9th annual cross-country ride known as Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer (C2C4C) and, including a $500,000 match from Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY), have raised over $1.5 million for the V Foundation to fund cutting-edge cancer research. Beginning in Cannon Beach, Oregon and ending in Long Branch, New Jersey, the annual ride covers nearly 3,000 miles over 27 days and gives employees the opportunity to come together in the fight against cancer.

The event, which launched with a group of oncology employees in 2014, has grown into a staple tradition for the New Jersey-based biopharmaceutical company whose mission is to discover, develop and deliver innovative medicines that help patients prevail over serious diseases. The V Foundation became the beneficiary of the ride in 2018, and the event has raised more than $8 million for the organization over the past five years.

“Our partnership with Bristol Myers Squibb for the Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer ride is an opportunity to bring hope to the millions of patients and families affected by cancer each year,” said Shane Jacobson, Chief Executive Officer at the V Foundation. “These incredible riders committed to months of training and fundraising for a cause greater than themselves, and because of their dedication, we are funding groundbreaking research that will improve treatments and save lives. We are grateful to the entire Bristol Myers Squibb team for uniting with us as one team for victory over cancer.”

Many of the C2C4C riders fought their own battles with the terrible disease, while others rode in honor of friends and family. As impactful as the funds raised for cancer research are, the “Why I Ride” stories from employees expressing the joy and catharsis they experienced as part of the community bound together to accomplish this cross-country journey.

For Bristol Myers Squibb employee Manual Almario, it was a chance to honor his wife, Theresa, who he lost to endometrial cancer in early 2022, his father and all cancer patients and caregivers. This ride was a meaningful opportunity for him to raise money to fund research in support of the V Foundation so that no family experiences these losses.

“Cancer doesn’t discriminate. You can be hit with the disease no matter your age, race or gender. You don’t expect it, but it could happen to you,” said Almario. “I can’t control cancer, but one thing I can control is my ability to move forward, be optimistic, and educate patients and caregivers that there is hope through science and innovation.”

The V Foundation is an ideal match for C2C4C because of its commitment to ensure that 100% of direct donations fund groundbreaking cancer research. The organization is hyper-focused on funding research that has game-changing potential – casting a wide net and whittling down to the best of the best in the cancer research space.

“I am so proud of the Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer riders who persevered through uphill climbs and challenging weather on their 225-mile segments across the U.S. with cancer patients top of mind. While it wasn’t easy, together, they pedaled, fundraised, and cheered each other on to help advance cancer research in support of the V Foundation,” said Catherine Owen, Senior Vice President, General Manager of U.S. Cardiovascular, Immunology, and Oncology, Bristol Myers Squibb. “The V Foundation is a trusted organization in the cancer community, and we are thrilled to continue to partner with them year over year in support of cancer research.”

The V Foundation holds 11 consecutive 4-star (highest) ratings from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities, making the foundation among the top 2% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation is also a GuideStar platinum-rated charity. To learn more or to donate, please visit www.v.org.

V Foundation for Cancer Research Teams Up with Pack of Wolves, NC State’s NIL Collective, to Raise Money and Awareness for Breast Cancer

V Foundation for Cancer Research Teams Up with Pack of Wolves, NC State’s NIL Collective, to Raise Money and Awareness for Breast Cancer

The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, has teamed up with student athletes from Pack of Wolves, a community of passionate fans, alumni and supporters of North Carolina State University Wolfpack Athletics, to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research during National Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.

The student athletes are all members of the NC State women’s basketball team. While unique to have an entire team of athletes sign on to a name, image and likeness (NIL) agreement, it’s a cause the team is passionate about. The V Foundation was founded by legendary NC State basketball coach, Jim Valvano, and ESPN in 1993, and the University and Athletics department has historically been active in supporting its mission.

Shared goals of this campaign include generating awareness, advocating for early, accessible screening and raising funds to support critical breast cancer research. Athletes will be pitted against each other in a friendly competition throughout the month to see who can generate the most engagement with their social media followers and raise the most money.

This partnership, made possible by Matt and Soogi Hong, is unique in that the sponsorship of Pack of Wolves student athletes is being funded by individuals, and then the sponsorship benefits are being transferred to the V Foundation. This first of its kind sponsorship can serve as a model for other individuals or businesses looking to partner with NC State student athletes while additionally supporting a worthwhile charity.

“This collaboration combines two areas our family is very passionate about, Wolfpack sports and the V Foundation’s work in cancer research,” said Matt Hong, former COO of Turner Sports and ‘94 NC State graduate. “We’re also excited to serve as a test case for other businesses or individuals to partner with NC State athletes to use their name, image and likeness to raise awareness and money for a good cause. Being able to support impactful organizations like the V Foundation is an attractive new benefit of the Pack of Wolves NIL platform.”

Funds raised during the campaign will support the Clea Shearer Breast Cancer Research Fund at the V Foundation. This fund was established in May 2022 in honor of Clea Shearer, co-founder of The Home Edit, to raise awareness of the importance of early detection and accessible screening services for all women, and propel forward research of the disease. To date, the V Foundation has funded $30.1 million toward game-changing breast cancer research.

The V Foundation Reaches $1 Million Match, Announces Over $2 Million Raised For Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

A Team Effort for Victory Over Cancer® With Funds Raised from Individual Donors, WWE and Titus O’Neil, First Watch Restaurants and a $1 Million Match from Mark and Cindy Pentecost

Cary, N.C. [September 30, 2022] – The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, is proud to announce that during September’s Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month over $2 million was raised for the Dick Vitale Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research. To date, the V Foundation has awarded more than $60 million to research grants for pediatric cancer. These additional funds were raised thanks to the overwhelming support of individual donors and corporate partners and a $1 million match proffered by Mark and Cindy Pentecost through their company ItWorks!.

“Cindy and I, along with our company ItWorks!, are so proud to support the V Foundation and the Dick Vitale Fund for Pediatric Cancer,” said Mark Pentecost of the family’s matching donation. “We are thrilled that the public met the challenge of our $1 million match and have helped raise $2 million for the fund. As a cancer survivor myself, I know what it takes to fight this dreadful disease and my heart aches for kids who go through this battle. We issued this challenge to make a difference. There’s still so much more to do in this fight, but we know that research is the path to a cure.”

The Pentecosts focused their gift on pediatric cancer in heed of the call of their longtime friend Dick Vitale, the Jimmy V Perseverance Award winner at the 2022 ESPYS, for whom the pediatric fund at the V Foundation is named. Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children over the age of one. Yet, only 4% of federal cancer funding goes to pediatrics. Private funding, like that from the V Foundation, is crucial in advancing research to advance Victory Over Cancer® for all.

“To all of the PTPers, contributors, donors – I say thank you on behalf of the V Foundation,” said Vitale. “There so much work that has to be done to support young kids battling this dreaded disease, and this $2 million+ will go towards game-changing research that will help us end pediatric cancer.”

Throughout September, a variety of other partners and initiatives assisted in raising funds for pediatric cancer including:

  • The Pediatric Cancer Research Fund through Dribble for Victory Over Cancer at Duke, North Carolina, NC State, St. John’s and UCLA
  • First Watch Restaurants donating a portion from the sale of every kids meal at its 400+ locations nationwide, in addition to collecting additional donations during Friends & Family pre-opening weekends at each new company-owned restaurant in September
  • A Walk 60 Miles in September Facebook Challenge
  • WWE releasing a new t-shirt with proceeds benefiting the V Foundation
  • WWE superstar Titus O’Neil proudly announcing a $100,000 donation in honor of Connor’s Cure, made by O’Neil’s Bullard Family Foundation and Heritage Insurance

“Like many people around the globe, I have lost a loved one to cancer,” said O’Neil. “My grandmother helped raise me and when she passed away from cancer, it was one of the hardest moments of my life. The V Foundation continues to blaze a trail in cancer research and I am humbled to support them in the fight against this devastating disease and help save children’s lives and move us closer to a cure.”

The V Foundation holds 11 consecutive 4-star (highest) ratings from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities, making the foundation among the top 2% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation is also a GuideStar platinum-rated charity.

“Victory Over Cancer® is a team effort,” said V Foundation CEO Shane Jacobson. “The V Foundation is extremely grateful for the support of all of our valued donors and partners in helping to accelerate better treatment options and cures for pediatric cancer.”

The V Foundation Announces September Fundraising Initiatives for Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

Events and Partnerships Support Childhood Cancer Research through Dick Vitale Fund

Cary, N.C. [September 7, 2022] – The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer research charity, announces a lineup of fundraising initiatives to recognize September’s Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. The V Foundation has awarded nearly $60 million in research grants through the Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund and September offers a variety of ways for supporters to help fund even more cutting-edge cancer research. In concert with these events and partnerships, Mark and Cindy Pentecost have announced they will match every dollar raised through September 30. This match, up to $1 million, will benefit the Vitale Fund. The Pentecosts want to honor Vitale’s battle with the disease, his recognition as the Jimmy V Perseverance Award winner at the 2022 ESPYS and encourage others to help save lives through pediatric cancer research.

“We have an outstanding group of partners who are committed to ending childhood cancer,” said Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation. “I applaud their tireless efforts to save our youngest cancer patients through fundraising for groundbreaking research. And I am thrilled that so many can join these initiatives – from breakfast, to basketball, to a walking challenge and a t-shirt purchase. I welcome everyone to join in our mission to achieve victory over cancer.”

The WWE and the V Foundation have partnered together since 2016 through funds raised by Connor’s Cure, which was established by WWE within the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation. Connor Michalek, an 8-year-old who battled a rare cancer affecting the brain and spinal cord, was a WWE superfan. Connor’s Cure has helped raise $3.8 million and assisted more than 500 families around the world. This September, the WWE is releasing a new t-shirt and donating 100% of the proceeds in support of Connor’s Cure through the V Foundation’s grant-making process. In addition, funding will continue to support the research being done at UMPC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

In addition, WWE superstar Titus O’Neil proudly announced a $100,000 donation to honor of Connor’s Cure to accelerate and advance pediatric cancer research. The gift moved the fund closer to Vitale’s challenge of raising $1 million and meeting the match. The donation was made by O’Neil’s Bullard Family Foundation and Heritage Insurance.

The V Foundation and the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation are joining forces for the Dribble for Victory Over Cancer program. These events, hosted annually since 2008 by UCLA and St. John’s University, are expanding to include new partnerships with Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC State University and more to come. Community members and sports teams will be invited to dribble through short on-campus courses culminating in the opportunity to meet the schools’ basketball players and coaches. The events offer a fun-filled day of sports and community-building while fundraising for research that will give kids battling cancer a chance at a brighter future. To learn more, visit thedribble.org.

A Walk 60 Miles in September Facebook Challenge has also been announced. Through this virtual challenge, participants will log 60 miles of walking, any time or place during September. Walkers are encouraged to post their progress on their individual fundraising pages to gather support and donations from their friends, families and communities. Participation is free and any walker who receives a donation will be mailed a V Foundation baseball hat. Learn more and set up a fundraiser here.

First Watch, an award-winning daytime restaurant, has been an ongoing sponsor of Dick Vitale’s annual gala since 2006. This year they’ve partnered with the V Foundation to fund lifesaving pediatric cancer research by donating 25 cents from the sale of every kid’s meal at locations nationwide. And, in September, at each new company-owned restaurant opening, customers will have the opportunity to make additional donations to the Vitale Fund during the Friends & Family pre-opening weekends. Learn more at v.org/partners/first-watch/.

“Kids helping kids is at the heart of our partnership with the V Foundation, and it’s been inspiring to see how family by family, meal by meal, our customers are powering a movement to change lives and achieve victory over cancer,” said Chris Tomasso, President and CEO of First Watch. “This month and all year long, First Watch is proud to join forces with Dick Vitale and the Foundation to support research into finding cures, in hopes that every child can live their life free of cancer and to their fullest potential.”

The V Foundation holds 11 consecutive 4-star (highest) ratings from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities, making the foundation among the top 2% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation is also a GuideStar platinum-rated charity. 17th Annual Dick Vitale Gala Raises $11.1 Million for Pediatric Cancer Research

17th Annual Dick Vitale Gala Raises $11.1 Million for Pediatric Cancer Research

Cary, N.C. [May 6, 2022] – The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a top-rated cancer charity, and ESPN Hall of Fame Sportscaster Dick Vitale are pleased to announce the 17th Annual Dick Vitale Gala has raised $11.1 million for pediatric cancer research. Held on May 6 at the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, the Gala hosted supporters and celebrities to further groundbreaking advancements in childhood cancer research. To date, the gala has helped raise nearly $55 million for the Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund at the V Foundation. This year, Vitale’s message took on special meaning as he shared stories of inspiration drawn from his own recent cancer journey. Dick announced his remission in April.

“The true stars at the Gala were the Dickie V All-Courageous Team, which features young cancer survivors,” Vitale said. “We surpassed our fundraising goal and are proud to announce that tonight’s event raised over $11 million for pediatric cancer research. Thank you to all the generous donors who have contributed this cause.”

This year’s sold-out event honored NFL superstar and ESPN host Keyshawn Johnson, tennis hall-of-famer and ESPN tennis analyst Chris Evert, and Baylor University men’s basketball coach Scott Drew. Vitale also presented the V Foundation John Saunders Courage Award to ESPN college football analyst Rod Gilmore, a fellow cancer survivor.

“Dick Vitale has managed to astound us again,” said Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation. “Immediately after finishing his own cancer journey, he hosts another incredible Gala and raises a record-breaking amount to fund pediatric cancer research through the V Foundation. His efforts are unmatched and our gratitude is overflowing. He is changing the lives of young cancer patients through his efforts.”

At the Gala, Jacobson announced a $1 million donation made by Jeff and Penny Vinik to the Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund and issued a challenge to match that $1 million donation to further pediatric cancer research. Jeff and Penny have personally donated nearly $3 million to the V Foundation through the Vinik Family Foundation, and the Lightning Foundation has provided $537,000 in sponsorships for the Dick Vitale Gala.

“Penny and I could not be more proud to support the work of the V Foundation, and there’s no better time to give than at Dickie V’s Gala,” said Jeff, owner of the back-to-back Stanley Cup winning Tampa Bay Lightning. “With so many cancer treatment breakthroughs on the horizon, we feel incredibly hopeful about the future.”

Vitale continues to rally support in the fight against cancer, drawing multiple celebrities to Sarasota for the event. Personalities who were in attendance this year included ESPN “SportsCenter” anchor Kevin Negandhi; basketball hall-of-famer, co-founder of the NBA’s Orlando Magic and former general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers Pat Williams; 10-year-old brain cancer survivor and Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan Noah Reeb; ESPN analyst Jay Bilas; former Villanova head men’s basketball coach Jay Wright; Notre Dame head men’s basketball coach Mike Brey; ESPN broadcaster Chris Fowler; Tampa Bay Buccaneers head football coach Todd Bowles; Michigan State head football coach Mel Tucker; pro tennis three-time grand slam champion and Olympic gold medalist Lindsay Davenport; tennis guru Nick Bollettieri; former Notre Dame and San Francisco 49ers football star and 2022 pro football hall-of-famer Bryant Young; Iona head men’s basketball coach and hall-of-famer Rick Pitino; Tennessee head men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes; ESPN broadcaster and former NFL player Booger McFarland; basketball commentator Mike Fratello; American professional pool player Jeanette Lee; and more.

Currently, only 4% of federal cancer funding is focused on pediatrics. Yet, pediatric cancers are the leading cause of death of American children over the age of one, with more than 15,000 children and adolescents diagnosed each year in the U.S. Private funding has become a critical component of advancing pediatric cancer research.

At the 2022 gala, it was announced that Dick Vitale would receive the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the 2022 ESPYS. In honor of Dick’s award, Mark and Cindy Pentecost, founders of It Works!, announced they will match all of your donations, up to $1 million, to the Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund. Learn more about the match here.

The 18th annual Dick Vitale Gala, benefiting the V Foundation, will be held May 5, 2023, at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota, Florida.

The honorees will be:

  • 3-Time World Series Champion with the San Francisco Giants, Buster Posey
  • NBA Hall of Famer, David Robinson
  • ESPN Tennis Analysts, John and Patrick McEnroe

The John Saunders Courage Award will go to NC State Hall of Famer Derek Whittenburg. The Dick Vitale Spirit Award will go to Tennessee Men’s Basketball Head Coach Rick Barnes.

The V Foundation holds 11 consecutive 4-star (highest) ratings from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities, making the Foundation among the top 2% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation for Cancer Research Welcomes New Members to Board of Directors

Big Names from Sports & Entertainment Join Mission for Victory Over Cancer®

Cary, N.C. [June 7, 2022] – The V Foundation, a top-rated cancer research charity, is pleased to announce Russell Wilson and Ciara, Rita Ferro, Buster Posey and Jeff Berry will be the newest members of the Foundation’s board of directors. The V Foundation is proud to have champions from the world of business, journalism, sports, entertainment and science to lead the organization as members of the board.

“We are thrilled to welcome this new slate of board members,” said Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation. “Each one brings a unique talent, a special perspective and a commitment to ending cancer. They will be instrumental as the V Foundation grows and soon eclipses our third decade of game-changing and lifesaving research.”

Russell Wilson is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback who joined the NFL’s Denver Broncos this off-season after spending his previous 10 seasons leading the Seattle Seahawks. Wilson has excelled in the league, earning Pro Bowl honors nine times and two trips to the Super Bowl. In 2021, Wilson was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for his dedication to his community. Russell’s leadership, passion and business acumen have resulted in assembling an impressive and diverse portfolio of business ventures. A graduate of NC State University with a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, he has landed major endorsements and global ambassadorships with companies including Nike, Microsoft, Wilson, Bose, Amazon, Verizon and Fanatics, among others. Wilson also co-founded Limitless Minds, a business coaching consultancy dedicated to optimizing performance and enriching culture within some of the world’s top organizations and elite performers.

Ciara is a Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. She is a multi-platinum selling superstar who has sold more than 23 million records worldwide. Ciara is not only known for her vocal talent and dance moves (her videos have been viewed over 2 billion times), she is the founder and CEO of her own label, Beauty Marks Entertainment (BME). In 2020, Ciara, along with husband Russell Wilson, launched The House of LR&C, a new concept in retail built upon the principles of Love, Respect, and Care, with a focus on doing good.

Wilson and Ciara are committed philanthropists. The Wilsons co-founded the Why Not You Foundation with a focus on pediatric cancer, fighting poverty and education. Since 2014, they have raised more than $10 million for pediatric cancer research. Recently they became New York Times Bestselling authors with the release of their first children’s book “Why Not You” (Random House) which was inspired by the work they do through their foundation. Through the foundation, the Wilsons also funded a charter school in Seattle, which opened in late 2021.

Rita Ferro is the president of advertising sales for Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution. Under her leadership, Disney transformed its advertising strategy and influenced the industry at large, resulting in a consultative and insights-led sales approach that allows clients to drive maximum growth in their businesses. Among her many industry honors, Ferro made history as the first Latinx woman, and third woman in 35 years, to receive the prestigious Frank Stanton Award for Excellence in Communication. In 2018, she was named to Variety’s Power of Women New York Impact list, honoring women across all aspects of the entertainment industry who are making an impact.

Buster Posey is a former Major League Baseball player who is a seven-time All-Star, three-time World Series champion, and 2012 National League MVP. He spent his entire 12-year career as the catcher for the San Francisco Giants. Prior to being drafted, Posey attended Florida State University. In 2016, Buster and his wife Kristen, launched the BP28 Foundation, which is focused on changing the outcomes for pediatric cancer patients by raising funds for pioneering research and treatment. To date, BP28 has raised more than $5.5 million; the Poseys have also spent hundreds of hours supporting patients and their families in their many hospital visits and hosting them at Giants games. The BP28 Foundation has partnered with the V Foundation to fund lifesaving research for young cancer patients.

Jeff Berry is an attorney, sports agent, and the longtime co-head of CAA Sports’ baseball division. A graduate of UNC Charlotte, Berry played one season in the minor leagues before attending Oklahoma City University School of Law where he received his Juris Doctor in 1998. Berry has been an agent for over two decades, and Forbes Magazine has repeatedly recognized him as one of The World’s Most Powerful Sports Agents. Known as a fierce player advocate, Berry has negotiated multiple record setting contracts and been an outspoken voice on labor issues and rule changes within the baseball industry.

“The V Foundation is adding five exceptional leaders to our board of directors,” said Evan Goldberg, chair of the V Foundation board. “There has been tremendous progress in cancer research, but there is more work to be done. Led by a strong board and fueled by Jim Valvano’s call to action, the V Foundation is committed to accelerating the research that will lead to cures for cancer.”

The V Foundation Board of Directors provides guidance to ensure the sustainability and long-term effectiveness of the organization while upholding its core principles. Its leadership has contributed to the V Foundation’s consistency, evidenced by the awarding of 11 consecutive 4-star (highest) ratings from Charity Navigator, America’s largest evaluator of charities. The V Foundation is among the top 2% of all charities evaluated. The V Foundation is also a GuideStar platinum-rated charity.

Greer, Ph.D., to its executive team as chief scientific officer. In her new position, Greer will advance the Foundation’s funding of cutting-edge research. She’ll work with the V Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee to steer funding to the most promising research opportunities, enhance the V Foundation’s research portfolio, and further improve communications about the impact of that research. She will be an integral member of the executive team as the Foundation triples its fundraising goals over the next 10 years.

“The addition of Dr. Greer strengthens the V Foundation and ensures we continue on a path toward victory over cancer,” said Bill Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the V Foundation Scientific Advisory Committee. “With her expertise and experience, she will lead our grant making team, build new partnerships, and amplify our efforts in storytelling to further illustrate the long-term impact of the research we fund. As we grow in our grant making, her leadership will play a vital role in our goal to advance research and defeat cancer.”

Greer joins the V Foundation team from the American Cancer Society, where she served as the senior scientific director, leading the Biochemistry and Immunology of Cancer Research Program. Greer also serves as a member of the Council and the Finance Committee of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) and the External Steering Committee for Nutrition and Cancer Prevention for the National Cancer Institute. Previously, Greer chaired the ASBMB Committee on Science Communication and Outreach, as well as chairing the Committee of Public Affairs for the American Association of Immunologists (AAI).

“I’m excited to join the V Foundation leadership team and focus on funding the nation’s most innovative research,” said Greer. “All V Foundation employees and the scientists they fund are passionate in their pursuit to end cancer, and it is an honor to join them. I look forward to collaborating with the Scientific Advisory Committee, building strong partnerships, and advancing the research that is saving lives.”

Greer was also a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar at Georgia State University, where she directed the Molecular Basis of Disease program as a tenured professor in the Department of Biology. For over a decade, she led an immunology research lab responsible for key findings in molecular immunology and new epigenetic targets in cancer. She received her doctorate in immunology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“Dr. Greer joins the V Foundation leadership team at an extraordinary moment in the history of the organization,” said Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation. “Our ability to expand game-changing research lives at the intersection of strategic investments and mission impact. Our donors have entrusted the V Foundation to fund all-star scientists and help save more lives. Fifth Annual Victory Ride to Cure Cancer Raises Over $325,000 for Cancer Research

Over $1.3 Million Raised Since Event’s Inception for Local Cancer Centers & Research Nationwide

Cary, N.C. [May 23, 2022] – The V Foundation for Cancer Research is proud to announce the fifth annual Victory Ride to Cure Cancer presented by Braswell Family Farms raised over $325,000 for cancer research. The event was held on Saturday, May 21, and brought nearly 700 participants to NC State University’s Centennial Campus to ride or volunteer in celebration or honor of loved ones affected by cancer. Since its inception, the Victory Ride has raised over $1.3 million for cancer research.

“This amazing event united our community to fight against cancer,” said Scott Clausson, a Victory Ride committee member. “We spent months planning to ensure the ride was safe and fun, while also making it a place to honor or remember those who have faced cancer. I’m proud that we raised so much to advance research and am already looking forward to the 2023 Victory Ride!”

Riders had the option to participate virtually from April 21 through May 21 or in-person on event day. During the MyVictory Month virtual experience, participants from across the country rode any time, any place and with any wheels, sharing their experience with #MyVictory. On Saturday’s live ride day, riders cycled 10-, 30-, 60- and 100-mile routes, as well as participated on-site via stationary spin bikes in partnership with CycleBar Brier Creek. Before riders began their scheduled start times, they were served breakfast from Braswell Family Farms.

The post-event festival had live music from E.G. Peters Band as well as offerings from local breweries, including Bond Brothers Beer Company, Crank Arm Brewing, Gizmo Brew Works, Raleigh Brewing, along with national brand, Corona. There were also local food trucks on-site, including Fiori Trattoria, Gonza Tacos, Gussy’s Greek, Beefy Bunz and dessert from Locopops.

“Ride day was incredible, from the start-line festival, through on-course support and the post-ride party,” said Brent Dafforn, a five-time Victory Ride participant and cancer survivor. “The V Foundation hosted a fun day with such a great purpose – advancing cancer research. It was exciting to be part of something that will help our family, friends and communities against such an awful disease.”

The V Foundation is proud to host this event in the Triangle, with 100% of rider-raised funds supporting Duke Cancer Institute, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Wake Forest Baptist Health Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as breakthrough cancer research nationwide. Funding from the 2021 Victory Ride was recently awarded to a collaborative grant between all three cancer centers focused on understanding cancer health disparities among American Indians in North Carolina.

“This is always such a fun day,” said Trey Braswell, fourth generation president of Braswell Family Farms. “I love the competition, the excitement, and the camaraderie.  We consider it a blessing to us at Braswell Family Farms to be able to partner with the V Foundation to put on the Victory Ride to raise money for cancer research.”

The V Foundation would like to thank its partners for helping to put on the ride, including presenting partner Braswell Family Farms, as well as CBS 17, iHeart Media Raleigh, Spectrum News and others. Partner Release: First Watch Announces Partnership With The V Foundation

As part of the new partnership, First Watch is donating 25 cents from every kids meal to support the Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund

Bradenton, Fla. [May 17, 2022 – GLOBE NEWSWIRE] – First Watch, the Daytime Dining concept serving breakfast, brunch and lunch, announced that the company has partnered with the V Foundation for Cancer Research to support the organization’s mission of achieving Victory Over Cancer®. As part of this new collaboration, First Watch will donate 25 cents from the sale of every kids meal at its more than 440 locations nationwide to the V Foundation’s Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund. The effort is anticipated to raise close to $500,000 in its first year.

“No child should suffer and no parent should watch their child suffer from cancer, and at First Watch we’re proud to launch this partnership where kids can help kids, by contributing to the V Foundation’s mission to achieve victory over cancer every time they dine at First Watch,” said Chris Tomasso, President and CEO of First Watch. “We’ve always admired Dick Vitale’s relentless passion and dedication to stamping out pediatric cancer in partnership with the Foundation, and it’s an honor to partner with Dick to bring this life-saving mission into every First Watch restaurant nationwide.”

As a corporate partner, First Watch will work with the V Foundation to strengthen the organization’s efforts to save lives and find cures through awareness and funding, 100% of which will go directly to pediatric cancer research. To foster additional support, First Watch has continued its ongoing sponsorship of the V Foundation’s annual gala, hosted in Sarasota, Fla., by V Foundation board member and longtime champion for pediatric cancer research, Dick Vitale. Most recently, the 17th annual gala held on May 6 raised over $11 million, bringing the event’s total to nearly $55 million since its inception.

“I’m thrilled my friends at First Watch are joining us in this effort against pediatric cancer and giving every kid the chance to help save the lives of kids battling cancer — one meal at a time,” said Dick Vitale. “Far too many children and their families are experiencing hardship because of this disease, and for far too long. It’s up to all of us to ensure pediatric oncologists have the resources they need to help our children turn the tide and reach their full potential, beyond cancer and towards a healthier future.”

Dick Vitale joined the V Foundation Board of Directors shortly after the passing of his friend and fellow ESPN broadcaster Jim Valvano to cancer. The fund in Vitale’s name is committed to stopping the disease and, to date, has awarded nearly $60 million to end pediatric cancer.

“First Watch is taking a generous stand against pediatric cancer, and we are grateful for their commitment to supporting research,” said Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation. “It will take collaboration and perseverance to beat this disease and this partnership has both. The money raised will support the nation’s best research and will help save the lives of young cancer patients.”

For First Watch, the partnership is the latest in a long tradition of community-based philanthropy. At the local level, First Watch has sparked charitable support with each new restaurant it opens by inspiring communities to donate to local nonprofit organizations during opening weekend, raising hundreds of thousands over the years for causes such as food security, education and youth services, among others.
