Barry Wood’s Legacy of Hope

Donor Committed to Fueling Lifesaving Cancer Research

As a devoted sports fan and lifelong NC State supporter, Barry Woods admired Jim Valvano and the legacy he left behind. Like many, he was deeply moved by Jim’s iconic 1993 ESPYS speech, where Jim inspired millions with his call to action: “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up!”® That message stuck with Barry, not just as a quote, but as a philosophy he carried with him when planning his own legacy.

When the time came to decide how to leave his mark, Barry knew part of it had to be with the V Foundation.

His decision to pledge a planned gift was deeply personal, shaped by the cancer journeys of close family and friends. Years ago, Barry’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thanks to early detection and advancements in research, she went on to live many healthy, cancer-free years.

“Planning for the future can be uncomfortable,” Barry shared. “But it gave me the chance to think, reflect, and continue supporting meaningful causes. If something happened tomorrow, I’d know my gift is going to a lifesaving mission.”

Barry’s career in pharmaceuticals also influenced his decision. Having visited cancer centers across the country, he saw firsthand that there’s still work to be done and a critical need for continued innovation, which reinforced his commitment to supporting game-changing research.

That’s why he felt compelled to act. The V Foundation’s promise that 100% of direct donations support cancer research gave Barry confidence that the V Foundation would be the best steward of his dollars.

“I know my donations are going to a greater cause,” Barry said. “I’m hopeful the V Foundation and its researchers will continue making groundbreaking discoveries leading to improved treatments and one day, a cure.”

For Barry, this gift represents his hope for a future where a cancer diagnosis doesn’t spark fear but opens the door for hope. He hopes the V Foundation will never give up until the world achieves Victory Over Cancer®.
