Remembering a Visionary: Geoffrey Mason (1940-2025)
We are deeply saddened by the passing of a true broadcasting legend and a foundational part of our V Foundation family, Geoffrey Mason. A Hall of Fame production executive and winner of 24 Emmy Awards, Geoff’s influence on sports television was unmatched.
Geoff was personally selected by Jim Valvano as a founding board member of the V Foundation for Cancer Research. He remained a devoted board member for the rest of his life, fueling our mission with the same passion he brought to the screen.
Steve Bornstein, former Chair of the V Foundation Board of Directors, shared: “Geoff was a giant visionary in television, never seeking credit. He preferred leading and mentoring teams, connecting people to projects, and was devoted to people and recovery of all sorts. He was a great teacher and mentor to everyone who came in his orbit.”
George Bodenheimer, former President of ESPN and V Foundation board member, said: “Geoff launched Jim Valvano’s broadcasting career at ABC Sports and ESPN was a beneficiary. The rest is history. He inspired us with his ideas and his passion for helping others and beating cancer.”
Evan Goldberg, Chair of the V Foundation Board of Directors: “Geoff’s dedication to Jim’s vision never wavered. He was a cornerstone of our Board, and his wisdom helped guide us toward the breakthroughs we see today.”
Geoff’s legacy lives on in every breakthrough we fund as we continue to accelerate Victory Over Cancer®. Our hearts are with his wife Chris, his son Geoff Jr., and all who were lucky enough to know him.
In honor of Geoff’s lifelong commitment, his family requests donations may be made to the V Foundation at https://donate.v.org/. As always, 100% of direct donations go to cancer research.
